Things Fall Apart Quote Analysis
“Until the Lions have their own historians, the history of the hunt will always glorify the hunter.” Hearing this quote challenges one’s thinking because even if they think they know the other side of the story, or the hunt, a primary source is the only way to actually gain the perspective of the lion. Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, was written not with a protagonist or antagonist but with first person perspective of each character as he or she has either succeeded or gone through bad events causing the story to have no real antagonist. In the beginning Okonkwo was the main character and was portrayed as a good person but a strong temper who only wanted to better his village. However as the chapters went on he is seen as an angry too quick to temper man who doesn't respect any of his fellow clan …show more content…
Mr Smith is a prominent member in his religion and community as he only fights to better his cause by destroying the other clan within the community. That other clan being the clan of Umuofia, has Okonkwo fighting the same way Mr. Smith is with violent actions and diplomatic decisions up until the end when Okonkwo kills a missionary and himself. Both Okonkwo and Mr. Smith hold themselves above everyone else in their community and except themselves to do extremely well in whatever they do. This is shown how both of them are so relentless with their cause and will stop at nothing to accomplish it. Even if it means desecrating a major religious figure by ripping off his mask or burning down the opposing church compound. One can clearly see how Chinua Achebe has added Mr. Smith because if the new religion did not have a temper ridden impulsive character like Okonkwo which would have made it seem to one sided in the fact that the church would start to be seen as the only good religion because it only had good

When I originally read about the traditions and rituals in the book, I thought that it was crazy. I believed that there was nothing in our society that compared to the sacredness of the kola nut. Even though I found the kola nut to be an incredibly interesting symbol, I found it very hard to relate to because our society has lost a sense of our traditions and rituals. For example, we have taken for granted the special relationship of marriage. This was a traditions that was never broken many years ago. However, divorce rates have gone up in the last thirty years. As the country has evolved, we have lost the sense of our old traditions. That is why I found it very hard to believe that we had something as sacred as a kola nut in our society.…

In life people are very rarely, if ever, purely good or evil. In novels authors tend not to create characters with an obvious moral standing not only to make their novel more applicable to the reader, but also to make the characters more complex and dynamic. Chinua Achebe uses this technique to develop the characters in his novel, Things Fall Apart. The main character, and protagonist in the novel, Okonkwo, is very morally dynamic showing some sensitivity to his family and friends, but in an attempting to rebel against his father, Okonkwo also exhibits the tendency to lash out violently.…

In the final paragraph of the book Things Fall Apart, Chinua Achebe seems to be saying that not all things that are written about his culture are exactly right. He is demonstrating that actions and events can be very much misinterpreted. The character of the commissioner serves as a direct example of how ignorant and lackadaisical some of these people who wrote about these events actually were. The commissioner is very inconsiderate and knows nothing of the culture or the man that he plans on writing about in an ethnography that he is working on. Achebe writes an entire book on Okonkwo and I think that he is saying that if this were a European account of Okonkwo there would be a much different analysis of events.…

Such a sad day today, the chief of the clan has died. He was such a great man,the third oldest of all nine villages and he improved the clan greatly. He made the clan so strong, that they could defeat all their enemies. I always showed respected the chief and “A man who pays respect to the great paves the way for his own greatness”(chapter 3). The chief was an inspiration to me and I will miss his leadership, but his death could have an advantage for me, because I could have the chance to prove myself as a worthy chief of the clan. The funeral started off wonderfully, with so much celebration and remembrance of the chief. People were pounding the ancient drums, jumping over walls, killing animals or cutting trees that came in the way and they all fired the gun for the last salute, dancing on roofs. They did all this because he was such a…

“If any man seeks for greatness, let him forget greatness and ask for truth, and he will find both.” Horace Mann. In Chinua Achebe’s novel, “Things Fall Apart” Okonkwo was viewed as a great man, was his greatness within his power? Greatness is based on character and choices not outward actions.…

The two characters that are quite comparable are, and will be broken down in this essay, are Paul from Hotel Rwanda, and Okonkwo from Things Fall Apart. These two men have many similarities and many differences. Both men were the head of a family, and took that position very seriously. They were not to fail at this. Okonkwo took a more aggressive approach in that he was to be respected by his family and if he wasn't he would force that upon them. He wasn't one to be kind and loving, but tough and strong like a rock, for his family. During the conflicts in the book Okonkwo only got harder and more stern during the tough times. Paul took the approach quite differently, he was very loving and kind to his family and very inclusive. His role was…

The relationship of Okonkwo to his Igbo society in Achebe's Things Fall Apart was one of pure being. Okonkwo displayed the finest examples of human qualities of what it took to be an Igbo man. Okonkwo strives to be strong, masculine, industrious, respected, and wealthy. This was Okonkwo's inner struggle to be as different from his father as possible, who he believed to have been weak, effeminate, lazy, shameful, disgraceful, and poor. Okonkwo achieves great social and financial success by embracing these ideals. He marries three wives and fathers several children. He has a farm with a barn full of yams, his obi, and a hut for each wife. He was also a well respected clansman. Nevertheless, Okonkwo would find that he was unable to adapt to the changing times as the white man came to live among his people. It was this unwillingness, stubbornness, to change from his Umuofia upbringing and his ambitious and fiery demeanor that eventually brought about Okonkwo's undoing.…

An aphorism is a pithy observation that contains a general truth, similar to what a proverb is. In the story Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, there are a variety of aphorisms said by different people to describe their point in a creative manner. One such that stood out is "A toad does not run in the daytime for nothing" said by Ogbuefi Idigo when he questions the group why a man in their village quit his job all of the sudden (Achebe 20). The aphorism said by Ogbuefi relates to toads and how the human nature, people do not do things peculiar without a reason, is true.…

Chinua Achebe does a great job showing Okonkwo’s identity challenges as a response to the Western culture. Without understanding how Okonkwo changed and why he did, it’s hard to actually understand the story line. The collision of the Ibo and Western culture challenges Okonkwo’s identity because he begins to be seen as less strong, he becomes more angry and ready to fight, and kind of looses respect from his family members because of his actions.…

Change, no matter the time or event, is inevitable. As the Earth rotates and time roles forward, people change, different customs are adopted, and civilizations evolve. Many of the most influential occurrences in history occur when cultures collide with each other. This quote by Kevin Chau illustrates the truth about these collisions “The nature of culture is evolution. The practice of culture is adaptation. ”(Kevin Chau) Upon the clash of two cultures typically one must adapt to survive else be consumed by the opposing culture. In Things Fall Apart, Chinua Achebe suggests that when cultures collide with a lack of empathy for each other things will indeed fall apart shown by the British missionaries and the Ibo people in the novel, along with violence in Nigeria today, however the collision of cultures can also be deemed a positive thing shown by intercultural exchange throughout history.…
