Things Fall Apart
“When the moon is shining, the cripple becomes hungry for a walk”. This proverb has an underling message that means a good cause or motivation causes a good effect. A personal story that can relate to this proverb is when I motivated myself enough to make a high level soccer team. I had had enough losing against my friends and other teams with my local travel team. I knew I needed to make a change so I asked my dad what I should do. “Dad, im done with northern elite. We won only one game this year and all my friends are already on different teams doing better.”
“Well what are you going to do about it?” he asked. “ remember that team that beat us 5-0 and they were really good? I think they were called Cardiff. I want to play for them.” “ Ok, ill look and see when they have their tryouts.” Throughout that period of time between that day and the tryouts, I tried to get time to practice on my own atleast three times a week. I knew I needed to keep up my work ethic and I did, I also knew that I was tired of playing my friends and losing which motivated me even more. When tryouts came I did well and apparently impressed the coaches due to the fact that I made the club team instead of going through the premier team first. This story relates to the proverb in “Things Fall Apart” because the motivation for me to make that team, came out in a good effect, me making the

When I was ten years old I tried out for my local travel soccer team. I did not expect to make it, but by some stroke of luck I did. I started playing and it was not what I was expecting. In the past I averaged a hat trick every game, but travel soccer was a lot different. I started playing defense, but that might be an overstatement, because I did not get a whole lot of minutes. I knew that if I wanted to play more I was going to have to put in more work outside of practice. I started practicing everyday switching from running, to foot skills, to agility training. I probably spent more time complaining about it and there were a few time that my parents had to push me to practice, but I knew that I had to put in the work.…

I was exhausted and every muscle in my body ached. I watched others play but could never figure out what I was doing wrong. The worst part was that I knew others were watching me and couldn’t believe I was even trying to play basketball. The whispers I had heard earlier encouraging me to try something new soon became inner voices of doubt telling me that I was the slowest and most uncoordinated player to ever set foot on the court. I began to think of excuses I could give my coach to withdraw from the tryout list. That is when my friend Tommy approached me. He is an elite athlete and could do almost anything with a basketball. He volunteered to teach me anything I needed to know about basketball. At first, I was hesitant because I did not want his pity or want to waste his time. But then I thought about the kind of friend Tommy was for even offering and my attitude changed. He was not the kind of person to judge me, and I knew his intentions were always sincere. For the next two months, he patiently taught me how to handle the ball and to move my feet. We worked on my shot every day and dribbled the ball until I couldn’t feel my arms. I was nowhere near the peak as far as basketball skills go, but I had at least started the climb with Tommy’s help. The day of tryouts finally arrived; I was so nervous that I started dripping sweat before I even arrived at the gym. Tommy gave me a fist bump and wished me…

Growing up, I was never naturally athletic and very injury prone. Regardless of these issues, I always remained determined and strived to accomplish my goals. As I enter high school one of my main goals was to make the varsity tennis team. During my freshmen year I practiced every day for the first 3 months of school hoping that I could just make the team. Unfortunately I tore a ligament in my wrist for the second time which prevented me from practicing till right before the tennis season started. I ended barely making the JV team which was very disappointing, but it only motivated me for next year. In my heart I knew that I if I was determined enough I could play varsity next year on my own merit. As I progressed through the sophomore year,…

After a very successful season of volleyball and great year in school, summer was approaching and soon after club ball. The anticipation for the club season was huge especially because junior nationals were taking place in Reno, Nevada that year and with the team we had our chances at gold were very strong. Tryouts took place about 3 months before nationals and with the teammates that participated we formed a very young but strong 18’s team. This meant…

7th grade tryouts were the first time that I actually had to try out for a school sports team, It was the most nervous I had ever been in my life up to that point. The summer that led up to tryouts consisted of throwing off that Louisville Slugger net to work on my fielding. I had made the improvements that I felt were necessary and put in the hard work that now has defined me as a player and as a student.…

It will take blood, sweat, and tears to accomplish my goal. Goals do not “just” happen you have to work for them. You will have your ups on the way to your goal but you will also have downs. I got my chance to shine last year when someone got hurt. I took advantage of an opportunity and made into success. I had to work as hard as I could. I had to overcome disadvantages of being too “small” or too “slow” and not “tall” enough. I had to prove that I could to play. When you are smaller than everyone else you have to play like you are tallest and try harder than the other person. My coach and my dad will play the biggest role in helping me achieve my goal.…

You earn recognition, all your playing time, and a starting position through hard work. I grew up playing all kinds of different sports. I played baseball, football and later in life I started to swim competitively. In each case, I had to learn to take the responsibility to do my part—for myself and for my teammates. Practice was mandatory and took priority over other interests of mine. This was hard for me, since I missed out on school dances, family activities and other fun events because I had to be at practice everyday. It also forced me to learn good time management skills as I started to balance school, a social life, daily two-hour practices and games on the weekends. The coaches can only teach so much and, while they tried, couldn’t force me to learn my plays or study in my off time. I knew my hard work was paying off when my coach would say, “Good job Gunnar, I’m proud of you!” That one sentence made me realize that my hard work had paid off and that I should continue to work even harder, not only in sports but also in everything I…

At this moment I've gotten my hopes up and I'm almost certain that I'm going to make the team. When the day of tryouts come, November 4rth, 2012, my alarm goes off and I wake up, get myself situated, say a prayer, grab my favorite sneakers (which at the time was the Under Armour Black Ice : Brandon Jennings Milwaukee Bucks Home Red Strap Colorway), tie them to my backpack, grab a bowl of frosted flakes and sling my backpack onto my scrawny shoulders and hop into my older brothers car so that he could drop me off at school. I’m a little nervous once I’ve finished my school day once the bell rings and the announcements go off saying in a big hefty voice “ALL BOYS PARTICIPATING IN BASKETBALL TRYOUTS PLEASE REPORT TO THE MAIN GYM NO LATER THAN TWO O’FIVE”. I sprint down the hallway and make sure I’m the first one in the gym. After a good two hours of running, doing drills I’ve done before and Scrimmaging I feel exhausted but none the less confident and satisfied with my…

Proverbs are phrases use to explain certain solutions. Proverbs can explain specific situations within certain words to get the point across. The function for proverbs is to describe something without having to be forward with what is being said. There were five proverbs from things fall apart that stuck out to me. These proverbs are “when a man says yes chi also says yes”, what is good in one place is bad in another”, “If I fall down for you and you fall down for it is play”, “A man who pays respect to the great paves the way for his own greatness” and “If one brought oil soiled it others”…
