Thin Air Persuasive Speech
“Charlotte, we're going to be late for our graduation. You know today is a going to be a big day for us,” Dallas said . Charlotte jumped out of bed and ran down the stairs to see her mom at the breakfast table drinking coffee, and reading the newspaper. “Hurry, we don’t want to be late,” said Dallas. Mom, now finishing her coffee, told them to first get dressed and get ready. The two zipped up stairs and got ready bumping into each other along the way.
They ran out the door straight to the car while mom was still getting her keys. After a while of driving, which seemed like forever, they had arrived at the academy. They are very experienced mountain climbers, and today was the day they graduated from the academy of rock climbing, and get their degree to climb Mount Everest. As they accepted their diplomas, they thought about the climb, both ready to pee their pants from both excitement and nervousness, and told the professor they accept the challenge of climbing Mount Everest.

Knowing it would take about two months, they started the climb with their instructor. They climbed to the first base camp. When they had arrived, they had realized that what they were doing now has been at both of the children's top things on their bucket list. They set up the tent and got ready for a little nap to restore their energy for the long hike.
When they awoke they had started their two month journey to the top of Mount Everest. They had started slipping, and sliding on the compacted snow from the other travelers. The instructor suggested losing the large item in the back of Charlotte's pack. She refused to, and kept hiking up the mountain to camp number two which is around 2,200 feet

At 1:15 a.m. I emerged from my tent with my boots laced, my ice-axe stowed, and my headlamp glowing. I was ready for this mountain, rearing to begin the ascent up its face. Before leaving base camp, my guide had a few words to share with the team. We gathered around him, and he began. “This will not be an easy climb,” he warned, “And not all of you will reach the summit. If you feel disoriented, I will send you down. If you are slowing, I will send you down. If you present a danger to yourself or to the team, I will send you down. If I tell you it is time, you will not object to my command. You will go down. Do you understand?” None of us had any intention of stopping. We spent weeks training for this climb and were certain that by midday we…

For my book report I have chosen "Into Thin Air: A personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster". This non-fiction book is written by Jon Krauker, who is a journalist. In this book, Krauker talks about the events which led him to participate in an expedition to Mt. Everest and what happens during this expedition. This expedition to Everest of 1996 is considered to be one of the deadliest season in history and Krauker tells the story of it. Krauker is a writer and a climber who is put on an assigment for Outside magazine to report on the growing commercialization on Mount Everest. Krauker decides that he wants to climb the mountain and therefore, accept the magazine's offer. He joins the Adventure Consultants, the climbing service, led by Rob Hall who is one of the most respected high-altitute guide in the world. Hall is a 35 year old guy from New Zealander and had climbed the Mount Everest many times. Another expedition team that was climbing the Everest during the same time as Krauker's group was a group led by Scott Fischer. Fischer is a 40 year old courageous guy who had variety of experience with the mountain. He even climbed the peak without supplemental oxygen in 1994. Some people Kreuker talks in the book and was climbing with are Andy Harris, Sandy Pittman, Beck Weathers and Doug Hansen. The expedition is structured into five camps which are the Base Camp, Camp One, Camp Two, Camp Three, and Camp Four. The climbing teams first spend a couple of weeks on Base Camp and start traveling to the other four camps. Each of these camps are about 2,000 feet higher than the previous one, and climbers bring food, water, and oxygen to each camp. All these gears make the expedition even harder for the climbers because of the extra weight that they have to carry and extra energy that they have to spend to do so.…

PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a psychiatric disorder that can occur following the experience or witnessing of life-threatening events such as the military combat, natural disasters, terrorism incidents, or any major tragedy. This is common in the life of veterans and is the leading cause of suicide among veterans. A VA patient who survived in Baghdad shares his experience with PTSD and explains how he knew he had this disability. Many veterans speak out about this issue and describe their continuous anger, alcohol addiction, and constantly wanted to fight. They usually feel very isolated and distant from their loved ones. One patient states, “PTSD involves rocketing into extreme states of stress re-activity; in the form of terror, rage, and uncontrollable impulses, and plunging into equally extreme states of being shut-down—exhaustion, emotional numbing, despair, and dissociation”. PTSD is about having fear and anxiety, allowing veterans to rage with anger and different emotion. There are many factors to PTSD, which affects others in different ways; or example, using video games to keep them occupied, spending money due to the lack of impulse control because of changes in their brain, and even not obtaining another job.…

The climb itself occurs on April Fools day and the author compares herself and her partner to “April Fools” when she states,”The April fools, married with fear and laughter on Polar Circus." I can distinguish them as fools myself as anyone who would deliberately put themselves in danger to complete a climb at that time of year is insane, no matter how passionate they are about the activity. She also concludes that because of this fear and foolishness, she becomes wiser as shown through the thesis: "The tango with fear makes me…
