EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Background

The college of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS) consists of five schools3 and one institute. The mission of the college is to create and transmit ideas, knowledge, virtues and values to students with a view to preparing them to be leaders and workers for their country in particular and the world at large. CHUSS has a reputation for excellence and a commitment to ensuring that its students are well prepared for the ever-changing job market.
The Department of Planning and Development of Makerere University contracted Consultants to carry out a tracer study of graduates of humanities and social sciences. The main objective of this study was to establish employment opportunities and performance of graduates of the following Bachelor of Arts (B.A) programmes: Development studies, Environmental management, Tourism and Urban planning from 2003 to 2008. The study also assessed whether the knowledge and skills imparted to graduates in the specified disciplines and programmes were adequate to prepare them for the jobs they are holding.

The tracer study covered ten purposively selected districts from the following regions: Central Region (Kampala, Mukono and Wakiso districts); Eastern Region (Jinja and Mbale districts); Northern Region (Gulu and Lira districts); and Western Region (Kabale, Kabarole and Mbarara districts).

MAJOR FINDINGS

The study targeted 1000 graduates, 200 employers and 30 academic staff. With regard to graduates, the study traced seven hundred sixty three (763) distributed as follows: development studies (221); environmental management (185); tourism (209); and urban planning
