“There’s No Such Thing as Free Lunch.”
Ana G. Asitimbay September 29, 2010
SSE103 Take-Home Examination
3. “There’s no such thing as free lunch.” Explain. List several things that are really free and several things that are commonly believed to be free but aren’t.

What’s Free and believed to be Free?

When I was in high school i remember i had free lunch and some other friends had to pay a quarter (25 cents). Now that I actually understand and analyze "there's no such thing as a free lunch" because if there was free lunch then no one will have to pay for it, but there was someone paying for it or I had to either go to school in order to get to eat free lunch. Someone will always end up paying for a so called “free lunch”. Everything in life has a price or sometimes something is “free” only with something in exchange. We live in a world where everything is based on exchange and transactions. We all are told that nothing is for free in life, everything has a value.
We never get something for nothing. These things are believed to be free but there is always a price behind this so called “free things”. Either in a restaurant, grocery store, or mall we see “buy one get one for free”. If we think about it this is not free because if it was “free” they will just give it to us without buying something in exchange. In our society sometimes if someone wants people to come to their speech or performance they either say there is free lunch and free drinks. These things seem to be free but they are not. Even though in this case we are not buying anything in order to get the “free” food, but we are attending to see someone give a speech or performance so we are getting something in return just for their benefit. When we hear about something being free it absolutely comes to mind that there will be some type of trading going on.
In this world that seems crazily in the need for things, possessions, and stuff, it is really hard to find something that is really free. A smile is something free we are free

Due to the fact that price exceeds quantity, students are refusing to eat. The National School Lunch Program claims to “provide nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free lunches to more than 31 million children each school day,” (National School Lunch Program 1) but do they mean it? Often times the factor of nutrition is questionable in the food provided in school lunches. An example being one day a student who does not possess the benefit of the National School Lunch Program’s free lunch decides to eat the so-called “nutritionally balanced food” (National School Lunch…

A free- rider is a person who wants others to pay for a public good and then plan to use the good themselves; if many people act as free riders, the public good may never be provided. The problem with free-rider is when something is offered with no charge, people will demand more of it and later that create a shortage on those resources. An Example of free-riders would be health care, which requires that hospitals provide emergency care to anyone who needs it, regardless of citizenship, legal status or ability to pay, so anyone can get services whether they paid for that service or not. For public goods to be offered tax payer must first pay for the good but many people don’t pay taxes to be using the services it offers, which I can admit…

In contrast to the argument of the anti-capitalistic view that the free-market fosters Impersonalism and Individualism, Ewert proves that it promotes relationships on both business and personal levels by facilitating human interaction. Henry Hazlitt explained the art that of economics involves examining the long-term effects that a policy has among all groups involved (Hazlitt, page 17). Policies that enforce limited federal regulations and taxes will result in the prosperity of all people who choose to put forth the time and effort to reach their goals. In closing, it is important to remember that true wealth and prosperity are gained by living for Christ (Private Property and Worship of…

I should be considered for this membership without charge because I will be worth the money used.…

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) gives schools cash and commodities to set the cost of the program's food and foodservice. Added cash is provided to lunches for low-income children. To participate in the program, schools must serve lunches that meet Federal nutritional requirements and offer free and cheap lunches to children determined eligible for such benefits”(Price, Kuhn 1). Taking care of the future is a necessity and the national school lunch program reduces prices and brings in better food…

When someone says free, nobody assumes money. People consider America, or the right to speak freely without worry, not free college. To brand something that costs so much now as free would be quite a large task. “That’s why I am sending this Congress a bold new plan to lower the cost of community college – to zero”, former President Barrack Obama stated in his speech on free tuition. He states that college can cost nothing to anyone, but free will never be free. Credit is not given, only earned. Increasing the already insatiable amount of taxes that American citizens pay for is just the beginning. Lowering the quality of education received when there are thousands of new students going to institutions just for the reason that it is free. Higher education will be suffering in numerous ways, including: increased quantity of students, reduced salary once a degree is attained, not to mention a higher percentage of scholars dropping out. The first two years of college should not be “free.”…

Further, nothing is truly free. Were college free to all students, someone would still have to pay those bills. Public education is already the single largest expense of non-federal governments and a huge part of the federal expense. Increasing the scope of free public education would also significantly increase the costs involved - those costs must be borne by someone. So, you either pay for it now as tuition or you pay for it for the rest of your life in the form of taxes but either way, you'll pay for it.…
