Can you ever imagine a science fictional story being related to a free verse poem? I definitely can't. But sure enough, in the science fiction book The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury, there is a story called "There Will Come Soft Rains". This story relates in theme to a free verse poem by Carl Sandburg named "Four Preludes on Playthings of the Wind". The common question is: "How in the world do these 2 pieces of work relate in theme? Shockingly, however, there are many points where theme is related and compared.…

Dreams are the paints of a great artist, and the world is their canvas. Artists are able to produce beautiful art pieces using their ideas and imaginations. Through art, we are able to communicate stories of tragedy, peace, hardship, and ease. In many ways, visual art and written stories can be compared to one another. Like a frame to a picture, the techniques in a short story help keep the story together. As for the elements they can be seen as the painting itself, providing both story and beauty. Both techniques and elements play crucial roles together. In both short stories “The Blues Merchant” and “Rich For One Day”, the influence of the ironic technique towards characterization and theme can be noticeably seen.…

From the beginning until the end of the story, the narrator uses a deadpan and passive tone that does not change to express different emotions. Even though the story undergoes different changes, the narrator does not change the tone to make it more suspenseful or to give readers a signal of some shift in the story or in the characters’ attitude or temper. “When he arrived in the square, carrying the black wooden box, there was a murmur of conversation among the villagers, and he waved and called, “Little late today, folks””(121). Every person in the village knows the box and their mood changes when they see the box because the lottery is going to start. On the other hand, the narrator did not make any change toward the different perspectives that the story was taking place. The narrator is not very expressive. In fact, she does not make any change of humor during the entire story. In addition, the narrator’s tone shows a type of social preference toward the characters’ position in society. This is especially true during the time they are gathering to conduct the lottery. The children assemble first and then the boys, girls, women and finally the men.…

The tone, along with the foreshadowing used in the beginning of the story, create a mood of anticipation and uncertainty. The purpose of all this is to create suspense and to make the story move along faster. For instance, halfway through the story the reader gets a clear feeling that something bad is going to happen, which helps to build up their expectations and alerts them that the story will take an unexpected turn soon. The line, “It became clear at once that help was needed, because the husband was not pleased” is an example of the foreshadowing in the story, because it is at this moment that the reader realizes that the wife’s good intentions did not have a positive effect on her…

‘There Will Come Soft Rains’ made me feel absolutely devastated. Immersing me slowly in its melancholy world of rubbles, dust and ashes burning away in a nuclear war. Is by far the shortest, sharpest and most depressing short story that I have ever read. ‘There Will Come Soft Rains’ is a snapshot that perfectly captures all of the social paranoias in society during the post war period of the 1950s. Rendering the beautiful and power mind of Ray Bradbury in a 4 page short story. Bradbury was at his absolute best when portraying the overwhelming sense of desolation and bleakness throughout the story. Like Ray Bradbury’s other short story ‘The Veldt’, ‘There Will Come Soft Rains’ is a story that is able to teach yet another stingingly unforgettable lesson about technology that shines…
