There Is a Rigth Way to Speak?

Satisfactory Essays
In our society there are many ways to speak either correctly or incorrectly. This is where there is a big misunderstanding, because of many people that came from different countries and they bring up new ways to communicate. I believe that we live in a world with many different cultures; to say that there is a right way to speak cannot apply to everyone universally.
In Kingston story we can see that the girl with a different culture comes to a American school and she spent three years without saying a word, because she don’t know how to speak English and silence was her only friend .she was afraid of coming a victim of other because of her absent. She was a girl that is still finding herself in a place where silence is not acceptable. However When she got to a Chinese school everything changed and the people that were in silent before were loud, she felt at home and more comfortable because she could understand everything better.
Also there is another way to communicate for example In the united states many people feel that speaking directly is proper and masculine, while indirectness is viewed as weak and feminine. According to Tannen her article, “his politeness is her powerlessness”, Entire cultures operate on elaborate system of indirectness”. There is not an exactly way to speak. I believe that it is not everyone else speaks, but how you speak: this is what truly matters and no one should be able to change that.

People communicate to understand and to be understood. The two ways of which we communicate are verbal communication and non-verbal communication. With verbal communication we use our voices to speak to people. It is important to remember that when we are speaking to people, we need to change the way we speak and the vocabulary we use so that the person/people we are speaking to can understand us. For example, when speaking to a child, it is a good idea for you to get down to their level, use a soft tone of voice and have eye contact with them.…

When communicating you need to adapt to different situations e.g. you would not talk to a colleague at school in the same way you would talk to a friend in a bar. It is also important to remember that talking is not the only way we communicate, our body language and the way we dress are all forms of communication. The non-spoken forms are as powerful, and can be open to misinterpretation. For example if you are aware that a colleague or child has a hearing impairment you would ensure you face them when talking so that they could lip read, you may also make eye contact so they know you are talking to them and you would slow down your speech. You could also use gestures where appropriate. I am aware that my job and social role may leave me open to parents approaching me to ask questions but more importantly,…

Communication is said to be successful when the desired objective is attained. In my current role I sometimes use body language as I do with words with some individuals this could be facial expressions, eye contact, movement of arms, hands and legs or focus my eyes on the individual but without intimidating the individual. We can tell if someone’s speech is effective or not by looking at the way they speaks. All people have a certain way of speaking style. Some may have a polite way of speaking, and some speak rudely, or some are speak loudly, or speak in a low voice. Some people speak fast, and others speak slowly. But not all ways of speaking are effective. For instance, the way some people communicate leads to arguments or disagreements when they speak rudely. Struggle to Be an All-American Girl starts out with Elizabeth Wong describing a school. She tells about both her brother and her dreaded going to her Chinese school and the different atmospheres of the two schools. The Chinese school was like a dusty old chest and the other was like the box that a new pair of shoes came in. Both held treasures but she was far more interested in the new than what she felt to be old. While the Chinese school focused mainly on language, she points out that every day started with a lesson in politeness. To Wong the language was rough and without beauty. Shetells us of her grandmother’s way of speaking and how it was embarrassing to her. She didn’t want to be thought of as talking nonsense, hurried gibberish. Her brother seemed to feel the same way and he was very hard on his mother. He would constantly correct her even if she was in the middle of talking and if he messed up it was blamed on her. Wong reflects on her departure from that school, portraying it as an escape. She had multiple cultures influence her life but she was most proud that she was not a Chinese person but an American. The last sentence reveals that she regrets this.…
