Hesiod’s Theogeny

In Hesiod’s Theogeny, we are taken through the creation myths or the birth of the world. The four primeval entities, create distinct stages of either symbiosis or
Separation/individuation. The following will describe the literal and symbolic meaning of each entity, and apply one of the stages to it. The Cosmogony, or the beginning of the birth of the gods, begins with one primeval entity, Chaos. Chaos literally represents the void or the gaping yawn. He also represents symbolically the womb from which all primordial beings originate. Chaos is also described as a mist or air. When Gaia emerges as earth, it creates a symbiosis of the elements of air and earth coming together. Nothing on earth can survive without air, and there are many scientific theories explaining the creation of earth from the void of space. Out of this void in the Hesiod’s Theogeny, comes Gaia, Tartaros/Erebus and Eros.
Gaia literally represents the earth to emerge from the void and symbolically represents mother earth. Gaia could not exist without Chaos, and everything born on earth comes from the mother Gaia. Humans, plant-life, and animals have a symbiotic relationship with the earth. The earth feeds all animals, and provides a home and protection, much like the relationship of a human mother to her child.
Symbolically she is the archetype role of the mother, and could be compared to the Virgin Mary, in that she reproduces parthenogenetically, three more male entities, Pontus, Ouranos and Ourea without sexual intercourse. From these offspring she begins the stages of separation and individuation, since each offspring has its own distinct attributes. Ouranos and Pontus create a further separation by creating more offspring such as the sea monsters, Hecatoncheires, Cyclops and Titans.
Eros represents literally love and symbolically, is the binding principle in nature. Eros represents sexual desire and

The great primordial god, Uranus, was defeated by his titan son, Cronus, because he castrated him with a sickle. The primordials “were an elder generation of gods who ruled the cosmos...They were responsible for the original ordering of time.” (theoi). The first of the primordial gods, Gaea, originated from a need. The Earth was never constant, with shapes and textures constantly changing. The air, land, and sea were too intertwined for anyone to separate (Napoli & Balit 2011). It was chaos. The Earth longed for order, needed it, and that is where Gaea was born from. Pontus and Uranus also originated from a need, but Gaea was the first. Though the primordials and titans were all-powerful and magnificent, they led to their own defeat.…

In the story of “The Making of Gods and People” by Leon Garfield and Edward Blishen, the origins of human beings as well as their path to creation is revealed. In the beginning, Gaia, the earth, and Uranus, the sky, were the only two present in this universe. Thus leading to their first children, which were fifty-headed and hundred-handed giants (Garfield and Blishen 1).These children caused terror making their father banish them to Tartarus, the underworld darkness. Similarly, when they bore Cyclopes, which were mountain-sized humans with only one eye, they too were banished into Tartarus. Lastly, they gave birth to Titans, which are giant humans, and which were finally permitted to stay. (1)…

Eros is the god of love and sexual desire. Although that’s what he is mainly known for, some myths believe him to be a fertility god as well. After Chaos, Eros is one of the primal gods of the generation. Eros was as powerful as Zeus, Cronus, or Uranus before they were born in Greek stories later on. It is said that Eros, the most handsome, could break the will of the wisest gods or strongest mortal when scratched by one of his arrows. I chose Eros because to me he had more special and unique power than others. Not only could he spark the flame of love between two people but he also could drive two people away and make them not like each other. Eros also had an interesting love story for himself.…

In the beginning there was chaos and Orana, the goddess of the sun, was born. She is the ruler who formulated what is now known as the core of the earth. She gathered many stars and crushed them together to create a glowing rock-like sphere. Orana then decided to have the core revolve around her so she could watch her creation. While doing this she ran into Lunasta, god of the moon. Lunasta moved the moon to have it revolve around the core too. So instead Orana and Lunasta decided to put the sun and the moon right next to each other. After a while one of the stars pinched Lunasta and gave him the idea to have a child with the sun goddess and add onto the core. They had three children together; Tierrana goddess of the land, Aguanta god of the water, and Vientino god of the wind. Lunasta did not want his children taking over his domain in the sky so he squished them together and threw them on the rock core. Tierrana took up half the core and Aguanta took up the other half. Vientino became stretched out over the entire core, on top of his siblings.…
