Themes In The Book The Help
I will be evaluating two different themes in the book The Help. One of the themes is racism, such as Jim Crow laws and the unkindness to the help. Some of the Jim Crow laws that are shown are, the help not being able to touch their employers. Another is that they can not use the same bathrooms. The help is not allowed to sit at the same table as a white or they could risk being fired, beaten, or even worse, death. The whites are extremely unkind to their help, they treat them poorly. Such as not paying them what they deserve or not letting them eat the same food as them. Miss Hilly, a whiter employer told many people that Blacks should never use the same bathroom as them because of harmful diseases. The whites also believe that they are better

    How does one achieve hero status? To me, there are two definitions of hero, (1) a person who is regarded as a model that is respected for qualities or achievements, and (2) anyone that in the face of danger and adversity or from a position of weakness displays courage and the will for self-sacrifice. The heroes or heroines in The Help are the latter. The Help by Kathryn Stockett is a novel about black maids in Jackson, Mississippi in 1962. The black maids work with Skeeter Phelan, a young white woman, to write a tell-all book about what it’s like to work as a black maid in the white homes of the segregated South. The chapters are narrated through the eyes of the three main heroes—Aibileen, Minny, and Skeeter. Skeeter Phelan is an aspiring writer who wants to create a series of truthful interviews with local black maids. “I’d like to write this showing the point of view of the help…They raise a white child and then twenty years later the child becomes the employer. It’s that irony, that they love us, yet…We don’t even allow them to use the toilet in the house.     Often in literature there are common themes that occur throughout eras and genres to link two otherwise different pieces of writing. One particular example of this occurrance can be seen in Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale and William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. Although these works have been written in very different time periods and use separate styles, there are two themes which link both stories and convey a very similar message. Strict societal roles and the treatment of women in patriarchal societies are prevalent ideas in both Shakespeare’s play and Atwood’s novel.
