Theme Of A Rose For Emily
One of the themes is emotional abuse and control.
The characters that help built this theme were Emily Grierson, who was a stubborn, troubled and artistic as the protagonist. I consider that she was stubborn because after receiving letters informing her that she would have to pay state taxes, she still refuses to pay them. She did not want to accept that now she had different terms regarding paying taxes.
Homer Barron was a carefree person, social and northern foreman. I view this antagonist characters as carefree because he had no intentions of getting married. Homer is considered Social because it is mentioned when laughter was heard in the square Homer was usually involved, he was well known by everyone in the town. It is said that Homer is a Yankee referring to the North.

Grierson, he was a controlling and protective father. Emily’s life was controlled by her father; he did not allow any men near her.
Judge Stevens was an older leader of the town, who was against of confronting women.
Tobe was another antagonist character in this story. Considered as a loyal and older servant to Emily. I find him faithful because he never spoke to anyone in the town about Emily. He was the intermediary and caregiver of Emily to the outside world.
These characters helped shaped this emotional abuse and controlling Theme that Emily was a victim of starting with her father. The people of the town also contributed with their gossip and judgment towards

The first sentence of the story sets the tone of how the citizens of the town felt about Emily: “When Miss Emily Grierson died, our whole town went to the funeral: the men thought a sort of respectful affection for a fallen monument, the women mostly out of curiosity to see inside of her house, which no one save an old manservant-a combined gardener and cook-had seen in at least ten years” (Kincaid, 1984). Significance of the story based on love. Her father was very controlling man, who thought that “None of the young men were quite good enough for Miss Emily” (Kincaid, 1984). After her father died she kept him the house and told everybody that her father is not dead. From my point of view this way Miss Emily shows a lot of respect and love for the father. Emily wants to be love again, that’s why when she felt in love with Hommer Barron she killed him, because he did not want to get married and was trying to leave…
