The Yellow Wallpaper Research Paper

Reaction Paper—The Yellow Wallpaper The Yellow wallpaper is written in the form of a first person narrative in which the narrator, a woman who is suffering from a “temporary nervous depression–a slight hysterical tendency”(Gilman, 1892/2014, p. 746), is restricted to write and confined to a bedroom by her physician husband John, so she can recover from her illness. She however disagrees with her husband’s views and believes that writing would make her feel better. The story is presented as a collection of the main character’s secret journal, which portray the consequences of her confinement on her deteriorating mental health.
At first, it seems that the story is about the specific characters, and revelations of a woman who is degenerating into insanity during the course of the summer. However, after careful examination
Given the way the story ends, the symbol of the woman behind the wallpaper serves as a strong evidence of my claim. By creating a strong and expressive narrator, and evocative use of symbols, Gilman forces the reader to see the The Yellow Wallpaper as story with more of an undertone of feminism than just about mental illness.
