Meeting the New Years Resolution New Years is always a fun time to look back at the past and remember the events that happened. It is also a time in which we look forward to the oncoming year and think about what changes we want or need to make to benefit ourselves and/or the other people around us. Among the few of the more popular categories for kids in our school fall under enjoying life more, being nicer to other people, getting organized, living a healthy lifestyle, and improving in school.
“My New Years resolution is to get better grades.“ said Johnny boobboo. Boobboo chose to improve his grades so he can develop better working habbits for when he graduates from high school. The easiest part for him is studying. Ashley Fataus said, “My New Year’s resolution is to stop gossiping.” Fataus chose this so she can improve her relationships with her friends and other people. The easiest part for her is to just not gossip. Brandon Saukdek said, “My New Year’s Resolution is to eat healthier.” The easiest part for Brandon will be to remember to stop eating fast food less. As easy as some of these goals seem the hardest part for all of these people is to follow through.
Anyone one who has ever made and broken a new year’s resolution can appreciate the difficulty of changing your behavior. Helpful strategies are to write down your goals, prepare a plan of action, and make a list of motivating statements. When taking a direct action towards achieving your goal you should reward your success and seek out social support. Saukdek says, “I think I can follow through, but I’ll probably still sometimes eat fast food.”

In Heidi Pollock’s “You Say You Want A Resolution” she discusses her philosophy on how to decide on and succeed at a New Year’s resolution. Her idea is that one should choose resolutions not because they could improve one’s life but because they could enrich one’s life in what may be an unlikely way. With a new year comes the opportunity to do new things, therefore, one’s resolution should reflect that. The example she gave in her proposal was one many attempt and often times fail; quit smoking. She says that this is not a new concept for a resolution because the knowledge that one should not smoke is “old news”. A resolution should be about a new experience that adds to one’s life. She suggests making three resolutions in three different categories of one’s life: Education/Practice, Health/Lifestyle, and most importantly Project/Task. She calls the last category the “wild card”, meant to increase one’s odds at achieving at least one of the three resolutions. She also stated five lessons to consider when working toward a resolution. Lesson one is that something that one person finds easy may be really difficult for another. Lesson two is that developing a new habit is more important than attaining an absolute goal. Lesson three suggests including “fail-safes”. One’s goal should be attainable. Lesson four is to just keep it simple. The final lesson is to plan ahead by making sure one’s resolution will be enjoyable enough to even consider. The point of her proposal is to remind her audience that if one’s resolution is pointless it will be more difficult to follow…

Without goals you have nothing to work towards. Some of the goals I have set for myself this year are to get into a high school program. The programs I would like to be in are Computer Science at Freehold Boro, Medical Science at Freehold Boro, or International Baccalaureate program and Freehold Township. I plan on achieving this goal by studying hard, getting good grades, and always striving for more. Another goal I have set for myself is to make the playoffs this year in football. I plan on achieving this goal by working hard at practice and getting all my teammates to work hard also. If I achieve these goals I think I will have an even more honorable…

    The Winner Within

“The Winner Within” is about a life plan for team players and what it takes to be a successful team. Each chapter is based on one subject, and that subject is one of the many things that a team needs to be successful. Pat Riley shares his game plan for team players in all of life, not just on the court. All of the strategies in this book are very inspiring and motivate teamwork. I think that the first chapter in the book, ‘The Innocent Climb’, is one of the most important concepts you have to have on a team. The innocent climb is the surge that occurs within a team as they are accomplishing more because of the synergy that occurs within a team. Innocence means understanding that the team comes first and being carried along by that. Teamwork and all of its benefits happen when everyone puts the team first. Innocence comes when the leader believes in something and puts him or herself out to accomplish that. A team in an Innocent Climb can feel the power surging, so internal rivalries, turf wars, and selfish behavior is all set aside. I learned from this chapter that it is very important to be more worried about the team success rather than my personal success.…
