Symbolism is the use of symbols to signify ideas and qualities by giving them symbolic meanings that are different from their literal sense. As the narrator tells his story, he refers to the couple as youths and never anything more than that. Carver writes, “They were kids themselves, but they were crazy in love, this eighteen-year-old boy and this seventeen-year-old girl when they married”. Symbolically, Carver means that they were in no means ready to get married due to the fact that they were just kids and not mature enough to make a commitment such as marriage even though they were madly in…

The only scientists who kept the Business-as-Usual sign hanging out during the war were the mathematicians and astronomers. The other men of learning were engaged in war work. Physicists were making better range-finders, chemists were making better poison gases, and theologians were proving that their gods were in the trenches qualifying for meritorious-conduct medals and kisses on both cheeks. But the astronomers and mathematicians were not doing their bits. While the war was in progress, Albert Einstein was completing his theory at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in Berlin, and British astronomers were working on plans to test it. It was fraternizing with the enemy. Scientists of this type have always been dangerous internationalists.…

Our story starts in the setting of a riverbank somewhat north of what is now Mille Lacs Lake. We come upon an elderly woman in her early fifties pulling in a net from a small river not much bigger than a creek. While pulling in her net she finds that it has something that is not a fish nor river waste, but it is a small child on a raft. She pulls the child from the raft and water and holds him close while he cries. While holding him she looks around to see if there are any people and sees none. After much consideration she decides to bring the child home with her. Now for years she has prayed for a small boy to call her own so she believes the gods have answered her prayers. When she reaches home she finds the baby to be fussing quiet a bit. So she unwraps and finds a scar running all the way from his shoulder to his hand, this scar looks much like lightning but the way he cries is like the sound of thunder so she names the young boy Animikee Obekwan. Which in her native tongue means Thunder Shoulder. Now upon hearing his name for the first time the young baby boy stops crying and stares at the elderly woman, when she looked into his eyes she saw the flash of lightning and heard the roar of thunder.…

I will use Oranges a poem written by Gary Soto to describe a symbol. Oranges are the symbol in this poem. It symbolizes the innocent love of a twelve-year-old boy who is in on his first date with a girl. Lines 35-42 read "I took the nickel from My pocket, then an orange, And set them quietly on The counter. When I looked up, The lady’s eyes met mine, And held them, knowing Very well what it was all About." (Soto, 1995) The oranges referred to in this line sounds more like hope. I will also be using this poem to give an example of imagery. " Light in her eyes, a smile. Starting at the corners of her mouth." (Soto, 1995) Those lines paint a picture of the girl's smile.…

The Princess looked down upon her lover. She saw his young face. Sparkling emerald eyes return her gaze. She knew that if their love affair was discovered it would lead to this?this trial in the king?s arena. She knew that behind the young man stood two doors, one concealed a beautiful blushing lady. Radiant with sapphire eyes and skin as white as the seasons first snow. If the man choose this door he would be married to the lady, on the spot no questions asked. But if the young man chose the other door then his doom was sealed, for a ferocious, merciless creature waited behind this door. With its dark cold eyes and fire-striped coat, lustful for the taste of blood, the tiger crouched behind the door ready to spring. The princess looked at her love. Even with death all around him, all the young man saw was the princess. The princess knew that he would die that day either by the tiger?s teeth and claws or by his own broken heart. For what could be worse than a tiger except perhaps marriage to another while your true love looks on? But the princess held her own secret. For although the secrets of the doors were shrouded in mystery the princess?s plan had been simple. She would beg, bribe, lie, even kill to get her way, and she got it. She knew behind which door stood the lady and behind which door stood the tiger. What?s more, the young man knew that she had learned the secret of the doors. He had expected her to know it. And he knew her well enough to know what door she would pick. He knew whether he would be facing the lady or the tiger. Without hesitation the princess moved her hand to the right. Then her lover standing straight and tall strode quickly over the white sands towards the door. The tiger took his life.…

Myth and history are necessary in explaining the world, and can be depended upon for guidance with one as reliable as the other. The idea of place, with its inherent myth and history, is an important factor in one 's identity because place shapes character and events. Robertson Davies ' Fifth Business, E. Anne Proulx 's The Shipping News, Michael Ondaatje 's In the Skin of a Lion, and Jack Hodgins ' The Invention of the World use myth and lore to describe the obstacles which the protagonists and others must get over or confront in order to recover their perspective identities. Place anchors the novels in Canada: Fifth Business in Ontario, The Shipping News in Newfoundland, In the Skin of a Lion in Toronto, and The Invention of the World on Vancouver Island. Because they are different places, different stories develop; but since these places are in Canada, they share the Idea of North in which the dream world is as important as the real world. This paper will demonstrate this typically Canadian characteristic of myth coexisting with reality, showing that explanations of identity given by myth and the oral tradition are at least as powerful as documented history.…
