The Ways We Lie Essay
Lying is “a false statement or action made with the intent to deceive.” (Ericsson1) Lying is a bad thing for anyone to do for various reasons. Three writers that agree are Stephanie Ericsson author of “The ways we Lie”, Richard Gunderman author of “is lying bad for us?”, and Angela Haupts author of “How lying affects your health”. These three writers give great insight on how these lies can affect ones mental health, as well as their psychological health and also how you can improve from those negative symptoms from lying.
There are many types of lies of which are terrible to tell due to the damage they can do psychologically such as white lies, facades, and omission just to name a few. White lies, stated by Ericsson are lies that “assume that the truth will cause more damage than a simple, harmless untruth.” Nobody should be deciding what’s best or not best for someone to know it can ruin ones confidence because for example if a lie was told saying someone looked good when they really looked …show more content…
Stop lying. To stop lying cold turkey isn’t very unrealistic, but if we can stop making concerted efforts to lie by exaggerating their day-to-day accomplishments, dropping excuses that aren’t true, and told partial truths instead. These simple steps can help reduce all those petty issues dramatically. According to Haupt “if you're making a conscious effort to cut back on the lies, Stroh suggests seeking like-minded, honest folk”. (Haupt 2). Usually you tend to act the people you are around most often so if you are around people who are honest and tell the truth for the most part then it will make it a lot easier for you to change your ways and be more honest about everything.
