Edens fortune cookie would say, you will face a lot of hard times, but if you get through it good things will come. Eden’s fortune cookie would say this because her character goes through many challenges in the story. First she gets raped and then she has problems with her friends and her family. When things finally do get resolved she starts to look at what she might do in the future. Caelin’s fortune cookie would say, people aren’t always who they seem to be. His would say this because he has been best friends with Kevin since they were little, they were basically like brothers. Caelin would have never believed that Kevin had actually hurt someone if Eden hadn't told him about what he did to her. Kevin’s fortune cookie would say, your actions will eventually have consequences. Kevin’s would say this because he did get away with sexually assaulting Eden, but when he did it to another girl she told the police. Kevin thought that he would keep getting away with doing this to girls. Vanessa’s fortune cookie would say, make sure you really listen to what people are saying. Hers would say this because when Eden, her daughter, would try to talk to her she would cut her off and not listen. Vanessa could have helped Eden when this first happened instead of three years later. Finally Amanda’s fortune cookie would say, don’t believe everything you hear. Amanda’s cookie would say this because Kevin, her brother, told her that him and Eden had sex, so Amanda thought that Eden was gross and couldn’t believe she would do that. In the article “Fat and Happy: In Defense of Fat Acceptance” written by Mary Ray Worley, she points out that obesity is considered negative, because society has determined that it is. She supports this idea, by reflecting back to her personal experiences of attending the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance (NAAFA) convention in San Diego, which is a convention to support and love yourself. Worley claimed it was like “another planet,” because of the “diversity” of sizes. According to Worley, everyone was accepted in this “planet” while in her “home planet”, that acceptance was lacking (Worley 163).…

In the novel What You Left Behind by Jessica Verdi there's two main themes. One theme is acceptance. Throughout the novel Ryden couldn't accept that he is a single father who is in high school. Even after the baby he tries to be like a normal teenager, but he can't when he has to take care of another human. Unfortunately, Ryden only accepts it at the end of the novel. “I love this baby. She's more than Meg's legacy. She is my daughter too” (356). Ryden accepts this, and he also admits and accepts that he hasn't been a good father too Hope. He can only grow as a father from there. “I can’t believe I’m doing this” I mutter into my wooly scarf. It’s 4 o’clock in the afternoon and the weather reads ten degrees Fahrenheit. I shift my weight and try to get into a more comfortable squatting position as the rocks dig into my boots. I look around; it’s a rather dreary day with no clouds in sight. I scribble in a notepad. Five minutes in and my hands are numb.…

For my paper, I chose to write about the short story, “I Stand Here Ironing,” by Tillie Olsen. In the story, a mother of a nineteen-year-old girl named Emily is ironing some clothes, as she is pondering a recent message she received from one of Emily’s counselors or teachers; a message of concerns with wanting to help her daughter. The mother begins to think back to the very beginning of Emily’s life. She starts stating all the various events that took place in Emily’s life that could have played a role in why Emily is the way she is now. These events had to do with Emily’s father walking out on them, Emily having to go to daycare in her early years, and also self esteem issues from not looking like the other girls in school.…

The first three quarters of the story is the tragic tale of one-sided love where Zachary Graff, the intelligent but socially awkward teenager falls in love with Sunny Burhman, the attractive and popular girl that everyone adores. She rejects his proposal and he can’t take it and decides to take his own life. Later, we find out his real love was Tobias, his one friend. His love for Sunny was his last way to fit in with the norms of society. Oates shows us the intertwined lives of three high school students and the paths taken to free themselves of the entrapment of their uncomfortable 1950s conventional lifestyles.…

The poem that I will analyze is from Sharon Olds, The Girl. This poem is quite graphic but it describes a life lesson that two girls had to endure. This poem describes a graphic preplanned rape event. The girls were 12 years old, it seems that they were at the wrong place and living a wild life, and getting involved with the erroneous people. They partied with their supposed best friend, this is what I am getting from the poem, they were being chased and after being caught they were raped. During trial they were asked to state what had happened to them. They exclaimed who their rapist were. After they went through that, the author goes along in explaining how one of the girls’ lives had changed. The fact that she no longer went to parties that smoked and did wild things. The girl was considered a good girl, a girl that thanked God, and a girl that had cheerleading in her life.…
