In the play “The Watsons Go to Birmingham” and the story “Don’t Give Up The Fight” they both have the same theme. The common theme is being different. In “Don’t Give Up The Fight” Ava is the only girl on her track team and she gets bullied for being different, for being a girl. But in ”The Watsons Go to Birmingham” the Watsons are African American and they move to Birmingham but soon realize they should have never moved because of all the segregation and bombing all African American churches and homes in Birmingham. But in “The Watsons Go to Birmingham” the Watsons risk their lives for moving to Birmingham and being near lots of bombing, but in “Don’t Give Up The Fight” Ava just risks herself by letting Coach McCoy and Jacob bully her.

In the story, “But remember boys, it doesn’t matter if you win or lose. Just do your best on Saturday. Coach McCoy continued his speech about winning and losing, which nobody, included. McCoy himself, believed. Along the way, he keeps addressing us as boys or men. It happens every time.” Just because she is a girl it doesn't mean you treat her differently. Coach McCoy could address them boys and girls or men and women. Also in the passage,”I tried to get up, but the pain in my right wrist was too harsh. It just hurt too much. I held in my tears, so many tears I wondered if there was an ocean waiting to be released.” Jacob knows she is fast and knows he would lose but he pushes her so he won’t get bullied for losing to a girl.He bullies her because she is fast, because she is the only girl that made the team, because she is the only girl. After I read the book and watched the movie The Watsons Go to Birmingham, I noticed there were some obvious major differences between the two. Three of the major differences I noticed include the diner discussion with the white employees, the absence of the character Rufus, and their cousins talking about school integration. These differences played a major part in how the story was told.…

The first example of discrimination which causes a huge problem is the discussion of race. Even though the book is written based in the nineties, it was still looked at as frowned upon to be in an interracial relationship. One day while the author was jogging through the park he noticed a very dark black man and a blonde woman jogging with a little terrier. He noticed that when the man turned the corner the first the day he peered behind him at the woman. The next day however he noticed the woman running in front of him and the man, already had passed the turn, again looked back at the woman. He sees these two people everywhere and wonders why they just cannot be together. He discusses it with his friend Joe Odem who tells him, “We don’t do black-on-white in Savannah…especially black male on white female,” (Berendt 55). Joe goes on to tell him that “A lot of things have changed over the past 20 years, but not that”( Berendt 55). However this is not the first time the author faces the harsh discrimination against African Americans in Savannah. Throughout the novel, the author attends these parties where the whole help staff is African American, from the caterer to the waiters and waitresses. There was one woman in particular, Lucille Wright. She was a light-skinned black woman who was known as one of Savannah’s leading hostesses who had catered several events for the rich people of…

Sherlock Jr. by Buster Keaton to my surprise proved to be quite comical. This was the first silent film that I have watched and enjoyed if you don't count "Tom and Jerry". I was intrigued and fascinated by how the story was portrayed without the use of words. Since the film was made in 1924 it appealed to the audience of that time and showed how a man was trying to get the attention and adoration of a woman. I am curious to how long it took to create a film almost a century ago due to the fact that it can take weeks and even months with todays technology depending on the films size. The background really helped personify the story and keep my interest. The jumping from the real world to his perceptive reality was realism and anti-realism.…

The equality of blacks versus white and Cajuns after the Civil Rights Movement was something still to be achieved. Although blacks had most of the same rights whites had, they were still treated poorly. This is portrayed in Ernest Gaines’ A Gathering of Old Men by the character Fix and his friends. They still believed in lynching blacks and treating them like inferiors. There is still hate and disdain towards blacks because of their skin color, even though the Civil Rights Movement brought freedom to them (Joey). Some whites however, treated blacks as equals and friends. For example, Mathu, an aging black man, raised the white woman Candy and lived on her land.…

Davis sends an anti-bigotry message in the play No Sugar by developing family bonds and relationships between the Millimurra family that are hurt because of the racist views held by some people. Racism is the biggest issue dealt with during this play, and the audience acknowledging that this is a wrong concept is largely due to the ways the Millimurra family act, making this an important sub-theme. Davis develops these bonds by showing the Millimurra’s regular attitudes towards each other in their everyday lives. Davis doesn’t make the Aboriginal people seem inexplicably perfect, he makes them act human; something the audience can pertain to.…

In to kill a mocking bird we see that the parents are teaching there kid that they should not play with black kid because just because they are black. They look at black people as trash. There is a quto in the story by aunt alexendria and says “There’s something in our world that makes men lose their heads- they couldn’t be fair if they treid. In our courts, when it’s a white man’s word against a black man’s word, the white always wins. They’re ugly, but these are the facts of life” (Lee 252). Aunt Alexandra’s excuse of not allowing Scout to play with Walter because she thinks he is trash proves how much segregation is going on already. The Finches and the Cunninghams are both white families, but Aunt Alexandra dislikes the Cunninghams because they are poor.We see this even in today as white people think that black people have no manners and teach there kids that they should not be near them because they want have a bad influence on there children.…

Segregation in the south was also an attitude of mind which governed even the smallest aspects of behaviour, including how people stood, sat, ate, walked and made eye contact. There were unspoken rules which governed the way that black and white people related to each other. For example whites never called black men ‘Mr’ or black women ‘Mrs’. Black and white children had learned this by the age of three or four.…

Discrimination is racial approach that has an effect on people negatively. The main drama in the novel is the underlying racial issue going throughout the entire book. The main character, Virgil Tibbs, is a tough individual who finds himself in with many racial situations. The first racial example in the novel is when Sam Woods take into custody Virgil Tibbs without any reason at all as he waits to catch a train. "On your feet, black boy he ordered...No you don’t…Make one false move and I'll drop you right then with a bullet in your spine" (15-16). Virgil Tibs is offended because…
