The Viking Raid
The Viking Raid

One afternoon I was out working in my fields, the king Viking came to me and all my neighbors, to take us to go fight the other empires, and to take their land. So, while we were on our boats going to the other land, some of our people died because it took so long to get there and also of malaria. Only a few died so it didn’t matter much. We then realized that we needed weapons, so the first village we invaded was little so we could take it without any weapons. Then we stole their weapon which weren’t very good but they would do until we got new ones at the next village. So we went on a traveling looking for new land to steal from. So now that I’ve gone through one raid, I want to tell you how I am as a fighter and how I feel. As a fighter I think that I am probley the best as far as combat but when it comes to anything with ships I am horrible with it. How I feel after the first raid is good like it is what I want to do almost like I was born for it. So as we were coming to the next village to invade so we all had to kill a person to prove that you were worth staying with the Vikings so everyone killed someone, so we all stayed on the ship. After raiding that village we had enough food and weapons to get back home and have more food for the village. We got on the ship and headed home. We got home and everyone cheered for us. We had enough food for the next three months, until we went on the next raid.

In the first two chapters of the informative book, Modern-day Vikings: A Practical Guide to Interacting with the Swedes, Christina Johansson Robinowitz and Lisa Werner Carr provide readers with an overview of Sweden’s history and relate it back to present day Sweden. Modern day Sweden is most notably known for their welfare state. They are reputed for the countries conscious efforts towards equality, fairness, and high values. However, the Swedes also have a barbarous Vikings past that contradicts the welfare state they have obtained in this present day and age. The Vikings were known for being merciless warriors who used their impressive ships to travel to faraway lands and raid wealthy, defenseless monasteries . The very fact that the Vikings…

On June 8th 793ce foreign ships brought an unexpected surprise to the Lindisfarne monastery, the Northmen had arrived. This attack marked the beginning of the Viking Age, an era of raids that shook the western world until its end at the battle of Hastings in 1066. These Northmen arrived and promptly the “heathen miserably destroyed God's church by rapine and slaughter .” It is important to note that the Vikings had an oral tradition and no known sources exist depicting events from their perspective. “We see the attack through the eyes of the victims, who spread the word that the Vikings were bloody and violent. In fact, they were violent, but no more than anyone else at the time. Compared to Charlemagne’s armies, the Vikings were amateurs.…

Hello all! My life has been a very calm, peaceful life that has been cozy and comfortable. I come from a noble ancestry and a happy, content family. I live in a hole called Bag End in a snug little village under a hill. I loved my life, even though it was a quiet life. Not much thrill in my daily experience of eating, cleaning, smoking, and relaxing, but that is how I liked it,in my own little world you could say. This all changed one day when an experience I had started a domino affect on my life with many adventures involved. It all started that one day while sitting on my porch, smoking a pipe, looking into the landscape when a mysterious man with a long beard, great staff, and massive dark blue cloak approached me. I recognized him as Gandalf, the famous wizard of the country . He asks me if I want to go on an adventure, but I quickly dismiss this question and excuse myself back into my house. I thought this would be the last time I would see him in a long period, but the next day, Gandalf plus 13 other dwarfs burst into my house clearing out my pantry during the process. Apparently I was chosen to be a burglar in this huge adventure to go to a dragon's den and steal all the treasure that Smuag, the dragon, was guarding. The treasure originally belonged to Thorin's grandfather dwarf, Thror who was the King at that time.Smuag the dragon killed and scattered all the people of Thror's village and has been at the mountain guarding the treasure ever since the incident. I then am basically forced to go on this mission but it was technically not forced because hey, who doesn't want an occasional adventure instead of the usual daily life? So I go on this adventure and…

    John Brown's Raid

The northerners seemed to act cautious over John Brown’s raid, almost trying to distance themselves from association, even though they may have agreed with it. There were, however, several northerners who were amazed at Brown’s dedication to such a cause, some viewing it as a heroic and martyr-type deed. His raid brought about the Southerners deepest fears though. Here was an African American trying to start an uprising of slaves; hence the southerners felt it had to be stopped. Even though Republicans tried not to be associated with Brown’s raid, the southern Democrats tied each of them together fueling the soon-to-be war.…

There are many things in American history; both good and bad. John Brown’s raid an Harpers Ferry, in particular, is one of those things. John Brown, a white abolitionist, is one of those ‘things in history,’ or rather, a history maker, for what he did and who he was is quite the story and had a huge impact on early America and the start of the Civil War. Brown is described by some as the man that “Killed slavery, sparked the Civil War, and seeded Civil rights” and as “An American who gave his life that millions of other Americans might be free.” It is still today a controversial argument about whether or not John Brown was an accomplished hero or a failed anti-slavery terrorist.…

I slashed the soldier time after time. Gashing his body multiple times, but it seemed to not affect him. I was fatigued and about to give up when I turned to see Alyieb coming behind me. He swung at the giants leg and in an instant he fell to the ground. In shock, I looked around to see a field covered with viking blood. I realized we had won the war and with all of my fellow fighters watching, I stabbed my sword straight through the heart of the enormous viking soldier. The next thing I remember is sitting on top of a crowd of my people, along with Alyieb. They were cheering and carried us all the way to our destination. As I settled my children into our new hut, the general approached Alyieb and I and notified us that we were chosen as the new King and Queen of Bernicia. It has been a few months now and I am happily married to King Alyieb and we have 5 beautiful kids, along with my own. Everything was wonderful until I got a letter from a viking soldier. It was a threat from the son of the giant viking soldier that I killed, stating that he would return with revengeful intentions. It seems that another war is on its…

    Grendel Narrative

I will begin my story from the point of my arrival in Denmark when my initial engagement takes place: I began my terror long ago when I sat in the darkness yelling and growling in pain of the happiness and joyousness coming from Hrothgar and his men yet, they still challenge me, after seven years they still celebrate and boast and laugh with their music. I, Grendel, through my great strength and immunity from the weapons of humanity, vow to plague the mead hall. I stayed in the darkness consumed with impatience, bitterness, and jealousy of listening to loud, joyous music coming from the hall; songs of rejoice make my hands scratch and claw at the top of my head. The king of Denmark shall flee in terror as my wrath is cast upon the people of the mead hall. After the laughter and the celebration were finished that night I came out of hiding from the marsh hidden in the darkness. I attacked from the front of the hall, destroying all in my path and devouring all those who stand in my way. The pathetic humans tried without success to prevent my massacre. Their weapons are primitive, worthless against my flesh. I hurled myself towards the crowds, devouring the humans who stood in my way. I hold my brutal and violent acts, those of jealousy and envy; just as the acts of my descendant Cain, in the highest regard as a force of sheer and utter destruction. I will prevail, of this I am sure.…
