The Value Of A College Athlete
The most memorable parts of my high school career have been winning the regional championship my freshman and sophomore years. We placed 4th my freshman year, and 7th my sophomore year at the North Dakota state tournament. Not making it to the state tournament this past year, has motivated me to work harder and become a stronger point guard. Playing basketball at a catholic school has played a major role in shaping the person and basketball player I am today. Basketball taught me many values such as teamwork, dedication, selflessness, discipline and leadership. I am looking for a college that will be a good fit for me academically and athletically. I believe I have not only the athletic ability but also the character to play at the college

Schooled is a documentary about if D1 college athletes should be paid even if they have a full ride scholarship. I think that if athletes can’t buy or afford things outside of school that they should be provided with money to do so. If these colleges are earning revenue off of these athletes, but the athletes themselves are seeing none of it. Not being able to do things outside of a sport like get a job is harder on kids who don’t have a full ride because they also have to pay for part of their tuition and not being able to get a job doesn’t help them at all.…

With March Madness dominating the headlines and airwaves, it’s difficult not to admire the passion and effort of these nineteen year old athletes. However, while the marketing of, and revenue from, the tournament continues to grow for the television networks, the NCAA, the participating universities and their coaches, the NCAA athletes participating in it are expressly prohibited from collecting any financial compensation at all whatsoever. There is the argument that NCAA student-athletes should not be paid because of an opportunity provided to pursue a free higher education not given to the general public; but the assertion has several flaws, not the least of which is the extensive time and energy demanded…

Richard Sherman, a premier athlete in the NFL, is what one would want to see in a student athlete. In high school, he was the salutatorian(second in his class) and graduated with a 4.2 GPA, while putting in the demanding hours required to be an elite athlete. He attended Stanford and continued his academic excellence, while maintaining that NFL prospect status. In an interview, Sherman was asked his stance on college athlete treatment: “While student athletes are being offered a free education, they do not have the time or enough opportunities to take advantage of that education. These athletes are being cut short and not getting what they deserve.” They are given a scholarship for school, yet they are expected…

Why should college athletes be paid to participate in their sports? College athletes are awarded tuition free college due to their hard work and athletic abilities, why should they get paid extra money outside of their tuition being paid? Student athletes in college only have two jobs while they are attending, to learn and become a better and smarter athlete. These student athletes don’t need extra money outside of having their tuition, room and board, and food paid for. They are also given clothing which takes away another money based need. These student athletes are given much more than other students and yet they still believe that they should be paid for their extra work outside of their performances. The main reason is because they are already paid through their scholarships to go to school and play sports. Other reasons to this opinion is to maintain their amatuer status, difficult…

The topic I chose is “Why are college athletes not being paid for playing sports in college while others around them are?” College athletes are like other professional athletes only thing different is they are one level under professionals and they are not being paid. The athletes are not being paid for their entertainment, but they are doing just about everything a professional athlete is doing such as being on television, playing on holidays, and being exposed to the media. This topic was chosen because I want to address the similar things both professional athletes and college athletes have in common because at the end of the day if this situation was vice versa, then the media would be wondering why professionals are not being paid, but college players are. Both College Players and Professional players should be paid because they both have the same effect on the world.…

For many college athletes, the lure of playing pro sports is intoxicating. Dreams of fancy cars, luxurious homes, tailor-made suits, voluptuous women, and the mental images of a crowded stadium chanting their name is enough for any collegiate athlete to think about abandoning their education for a chance at stardom. When the dreams are solidified with million dollar contracts, think immediately is replaced by impulse. Left behind in the frenzy is the much needed college education that no one seems to care about any more. An athletes only hope is to complete a college education first for what life's lessons has to offer later when hard-knocks is the final exam.…

Should college athletes be given legal payment for their contribution to the universities? Many colleges around the United States have given thought to paying the athletes that play at their schools, especially in Division 1 programs. Collegiate athletes believe they are the source of income for their school, and request to obtain a part of what they produce. Although lawmakers, and experts conclude that paying college athletes would remove the amateurism from the game, college athletes should be paid because they are making money for the college, they are dedicating countless hours of hard work, also they would stay in school longer.…

Have you ever had a job and never got paid for it? It has never happened to me and hopefully it never does but unfortunately college athletes do not a choice. The Chris Webber scandal brought up the question "Should college athletes be paid?" Webber decided to receive thousands of dollars along with his University of Michigan teammates from Ed Martin. Martin was the former Michigan booster who was arrested on charges of money laundering. There was also "unproven suspicions" that Webber and his teammates kept the game points close for the good of the gamblers as Martin requested.…
