The use of props in La Haine
The use of props in La Haine

In La Haine there are several props used, often symbolising key themes running throughout the film. As the film begins, we are introduced to our three protagonists. They are clearly in a slum-like setting and the overall aesthetic of the area gives a depressing and depraved feel to the film: this brings me to the first prop used. Marijuana and alcohol are passed frequently between the three main characters. These props serve as escapism from the drudgery of the setting they are involuntarily placed in, I believe Mathieu Kassovitz decided to use illicit substance in the film to add extra grit and reality into the picture; they are in poverty, they face violence; drug use is how they escape their situation.

Some time passes and the three explore the French wasteland that has been ravaged by rioters the night before. The character Vinz then leads the other two to an abandoned storage facility, to show them something he had found, it is a 9mm revolver pistol that had been lost by a police officer the night before. I believe that this prop shows the rebellious and violent nature Vinz has throughout the film. He detests the police and the unfair treatment he has received from them, so he covets the weapon as it is his 'ticket' to rebel and shoot a policemen. Later in the film he goes on to talk about the weapon, saying 'if you turn the other cheek then you’re dead' ultimately preaching to his friends that the weapon is a sign of their manhood and a symbol of their power against the institution. Later on, the same weapon is used in a scene in which they rendezvous with an acquaintance. He pretends to play Russian roulette with the gun. I think this scene shows how little regard is shown for life in the film.

The use of cars as props is a humorous crutch in the picture. The fact that they are built up to be ‘bad’ and thuggish, and you would take any of them as being car thieves, is then juxtaposed against their ignorance when it

I think that Frank Romero knows how much we love and take care of our cars because, well he drew it on a freeway and L.A has a lot of freeways that are packed with cars. Along with the fact that they are in a straight line tells me that L.A is a busy city. The colors set a bright, happy mood about the cars and city. I think he knows how much important it is for people in L.A to have a car since it is a very busy city. He thinks that our car culture is very interesting because he drew hearts around them. Probably the fact that people even sometimes say, "American Muscle," which could also have an impact on Romero's view of car culture in L.A. Overall, I think that he…

    Drive Driving Scene

Throughout this scene the audience rarely sees a direct clear shot of the driver. Often in this scene he is shown reflected in a mirror or a window. This creates the effect of mystery surrounding the Driver. He parks the car on the side of the road next to a building and an eye-line match from the drivers point-of-view follows two men wearing ski masks as they break into the building. The Driver tunes in to the police radio signal while simultaneously turning up the radio volume to listen to a sports game. A police officer is heard reporting shots fired at the location over the radio. The first robber makes it out and jumps into the backseat of the car. Panic and suspense ensue as they wait for the second robber to make it back. A police officer reports that he is 2 minutes away from the location. The camera zooms in on the Driver’s face, he appears passive and unfazed. Throughout the film the Driver has an air of passiveness and almost melancholy. This is illustrated especially in this scene as the Driver doesn't panic even in a high stress situation. An eye-line match shot shows the Driver looking at the door for the second robber. He still isn’t there causing the suspense to climb for viewers. The second robber is seen fleeing the scene and…

    La Haine Satire

La Haine (Hate) with its black & white, rough camera work; conveys a very serious theme. The film's opening consists of a montage of news footage depicting severe rioting, sets a very confrontational tone between the system and those who defy it. La Haine tells of just a story. After a teen is brutally beaten by the police, a suburb of Paris finds its self littered with over-turned cars blood, and broken glass of smashed windows and Molotov Cocktails. Three teens (Vinz, Hubert, and Saïd), who knew the boy that was beaten (now in the hospital) find themselves seeking revenge, leave their projects behind and travel to the capital. Vinz, seeks pure revenge in simply killing a police officer in retaliation. Hubert on the other hand believes that murdering a cop in return will do little to help their situation as it will most likely either intensify the rioting and and tension between the police and the residents of the projects or will just land themselves in prison. Saïd however finds himself struggling with the extremely complicated ethical dilemma at hand and has much less of a defined position. Saïd, contemplating both vinz's and…

It also advises the rising users of roads and their families to exercise maximum caution while in their new cars, which may cut short their lives within seconds. This show aims to curb the escalating incidences of road accidents, especially involving new cars, which the owners might manhandle. The explicit meaning addresses the demographic ranging from youthful adults to middle-aged viewers, cutting across both genders. I imbue personality into personal possessions, especially the cars and trucks I have owned, and after a time, I view them as more than just a mode of transportation. teenagers is their passion and their lust just like the old cars. Once someone had a passion for the old cars, and once upon a time someone was in a lust by the old car as well. The speaker himself or should we say as readers James Dickey that he reads the lives of past generations into their wrecked vehicles. One example of the speaker putting lives into their wrecked and old vehicles is when he was in the front of the car imaging people in the car through the back window, and when he imagines the old lady taking toys to the orphanage. The type of symbolism that the author uses for putting people’s lives work in two different types of ways. The symbolism shows how the authors mind can make a setting or playgrounds anywhere it must a prime example of the author making a setting is when he turned the junkyard into a paradise. The symbolism of the author putting new lives or the owner’s old life’s into dead cars also shows how anything can become subject to age and deterioration.…

A person with morals could say that the problem in this film is the laziness or failure of the entire building of people to prevent the accidents from happening. On the same level, there are people who know this behavior is wrong, but choose to ignore or go along with the behavior to avoid conflict. The problem an organization will face with personalities like this is the problem is like a small snowball rolling down a hill.
