The Unexpected Has something ever happened to you out of the blue? It was November 9th, 2003, and it was my 8th birthday. We were having my birthday party at Gayety’s Ice- Cream Parlor in Lansing, Illinois. Everyone was having such a great time, but then the party ended. My friend Courtney had lost her glove. We were searching for about ten minutes, but she had to go. About three seconds later my mom had found it. She told me to go to the back and see if her car was still there. I ran as fast as I could to the back door and then CRASH! I had run through the glass panel, thinking that it was a door. And someone was holding it open for me. I blacked out and when I woke up all I remembered was running. Everyone was shocked and they immediately call the paramedics to come and get me. When I arrived at St. Margaret Hospital, we were in the waiting room for at least an hour. I finally go a room and the doctor and nurses came in to see what had happened to me. Then they got to work. I got stitches on my lip, right hand, right knee, my right foot, and on my left calf. The doctor also said that I had a broken nose. After they were all done stitching me up, my mom noticed a little piece of skin sticking out of my lip. She asked the doctor if it would heel that way and he said yes that he had made a mistake and it would heel that way. Well, I didn’t want my lip like that so we asked him he could take them out and re-do them. The doctor said that if he did that then it would make a complete whole in my lip. The only other option was to get a plastic surgeon to re-stitch. It took three hours for the plastic surgeon to get to the hospital. It hurt so badly while she was putting the new stitches in. After she was done I had 28 stitches in all and a broken nose. The doctor did a walking test on me and I passed! I finally got to go home and rest. I was so happy to get home after the hospital and

The 20th century was an event anticipated by many to be the turning point of civilisation. As monotonous as it turned out to be Steven Amsterdam has depicted his interpretation of the turn of events that would have unravelled post-millennium if man-kind were not to change their interdependent ways. Through numerous apocalyptic events, both naturalistic and man-made Amsterdam attempts to persuade the reader with a warning of a bleak prospect. The episodic narrative Things We Didn’t See Coming shadows the fragmented journey of an unnamed protagonist as he progresses from innocence to experience. The non-designation of a name enables the reader to attribute their own interpretations and values through the adoption of an ‘everyman’ persona. As the disjointed stories begin to come together, it becomes apparent that the narrator (or every common man) although burdened by emotional, physical & spiritual discomfort can triumph against the odds with a pure will & effort to survive in a dystopian environment. The new world portrayed within the text is broken, however this is only complimented by the structural mayhem in which the novel has been compiled, and the future differs greatly from what we know now… Despite the possibility that the apocalypse may bring out the worst in people, through the eyes of the main protagonist the reader is given a sense of hope that the morality and common decency of most men can survive the worst, although become distorted in order to adapt to the netherworld in which they are present.…

When I went back to work my first day back was a full day of work at AJ's. By the end of the night I started to get light headed again and feeling really bad. I felt like I was going to pass out. I've never felt this much pain. I needed to do something about it and I knew I couldn't drive home so I had to call my mom. When she picked me up she knew I needed to go to the hospital again. When we got to the hospital they quickly put a IV in me and said that I was lacking fluids in my body. When they started to pump fluids in my body I could feel the blood/fluids going into my veins. We were in the hospital for 3 hours.…

The futuristic, catastrophic and hostile world created by Steven Amsterdam in Things We Didn’t See Coming forces the human race to reveal the emotions and characteristics that are required to survive the continual environmental calamities occurring in each short narrative. The struggles inflicted onto the people of the world distinguish the strong from the weak, brave from the cowardly and the hopeful from the realistic. The hope displayed by certain characters in this series of short narratives isn’t always advantageous, but can be the driving force that wills the floundering characters to continue to endure what is left of the diminishing environment. The characters that don’t hope in this novel seem to loose the sense of humanity, given that they do not have the full range of human emotions.…

When I woke up I didn't know what happened or where I was at the moment until the nurse told me when she woke me up and telling me that my surgery is all done and it went really well! I really don't remember much but I know I started to laugh when I saw a really big brace that started from my upper thigh all the way down to my ankle. It was really big and really heavy! I was out of the hospital a few minutes later after they took my vitals to make sure I was okay and all set to go home. Getting out of the bed was the worst part, imagine being really tired and loopy from the anesthesia and trying to lift your leg with a really big, heavy brace on your leg. On the way home I slept for the most part until I woke up and told my mom I wanted some chicken nuggets because I was starving from not eating all night and day. I got my chicken nuggets and went back to sleep.…

That pit in my stomach was no longer noticeable. There were no feelings of disgust or of fear either. In its place was a newfound revelation—one that allowed me to picture myself working in a hospital setting with patients like him. That experience enabled me to feel compassion for other human beings besides my own family members or myself. I desired to learn more about him, specifically who he was before all the burns plagued his skin and ultimately who he will become throughout the healing process. In addition to that, I was able to maintain my composure throughout the procedure, even though I was initially stunned. It did not take me long to regain my focus in order to complete the task at…

I was soon released from the hospital, and allowed to go home. It is impossible to forget the lousy car ride home. It hurt to sit up straight, so I laid down in the backseat of my mom’s Ford Explorer, and proceeded to watch a movie. By the time I got home, my back was killing me. I was forced to stay on our couch for the next few days, and needed help walking and showering, since I was not allowed to do anything to harm the stitches placed in both of the open wounds.…

Seeing I know you are reading this, curious as to what went wrong, here is a brief description of the blunder. After a supposedly successful operation in Galway, when I got my cast off, my arm was set the wrong way around. I was then operated on in Crumlin, which involved the re-breaking of my arm, and in doing so, they cut one of the main nerves in my arm which left my right arm powerless from the shoulder down. Special Surgeons were flown in from neighbouring hospitals and after several hours operation, I eventually regained consciousness and was back lying in the hospital bed. I was up and down, and in and out of Crumlin Hospital for many years later and yet to this day , I strongly believe it was faith that got me through the horrifying ordeal.…

It was a perfectly normal Saturday night, until I sat on the couch. I expected to enjoy a funny movie with my dad, but instead I got a trip to the hospital. I sat on the couch, and then I felt a sting in my elbow. At first, it felt like I got a shot at the doctor, but it slowly got worse, and felt more like a knife slicing into my elbow. I winced and sprung up from the couch. I squinted and my eyes scanned the spot where I just sat down. Aha, I thought. There was a small piece of plastic, and it looked like it broke off from a container.…
