The Transformation Of Gregor In Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis
In the book The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, Gregor Samsa wakes up one morning to find that he has turned into a giant roach like bug. Gregor was a traveling salesman, he hated his job but his family relied on him as he was the only one bringing in money. However after his transformation the structure of his family began to change; the bug Gregor is now treated with contempt and disgust, his sister becomes his caretaker, his father the breadwinner, and he becomes the burden. After spiraling into depression and self hate and receiving an injury from his father Gregor gives up on life and passes away. If I didn't have my parents to think about I'd have given in my notice a long time ago, I'd have gone up to the boss and told him just what I think, tell him everything I would, let him know just what I feel’” (Kafka). Gregor states quite clearly that he would like to quit! Yet he doesn’t, Gregor ignores his wants because he knows his parents rely on him. If Gregor chose to put himself first he would have quit a long time ago and would most likely be a lot happier. What if Gregor transformed because he was so unhappy. He was unhappy, and had been unhappy for a while when he transformed into a bug, so is it possible that his happiness would have prevented his turning?
Another thing Gregor never did was ask or question anything. He gave and gave without a thought, never receiving anything in return. After Gregor was a bug he is listening through the door as his father talks to his mother and sister about their financials. Greg knows without him they have no money and he worries, however as he listens he find out something he never knew before as his father goes through the box from his failed business. “Gregor heard how he opened the complicated lock and then closed it again after he had taken the item he wanted.
