The Three Types Of Parenting

Parenting is taking full responsibility and liability of a human being from the time they are born all the way until adulthood. Parenting is not just being a mother or a father. It is supporting a child in every way possible; spiritually, financially, emotionally, and physically. The way one parents their child depicts what kind of person they are. It is a personal preference that points out different and unique things about a person. For example, some parents or families have traditions or beliefs that say their children must be raised in a certain religion. By giving no leverage, there is no room for change and they will not take any pleas or bargains into consideration. Parents lay down the rules and they expect children to follow them without any question. With this type of parenting, when children try to challenge the rules, there is no debating or discussing the situation, it’s a strict “because I said so” answer. (Morin, n.d.) The way they discipline their children is very different from the other three types of parenting. Discipline is training one to obey the rules or doing something to correct the bad behavior. (Discipline, 2011) Strict parents like these believe that when they discipline their child, this means to punish them. Consequences are the results of an action that has been done. There are two types of consequences: Reinforcement and Punishment. Reinforcement encourages good behavior and helps to keep the lines of communication open between a parent and child. Punishments impose suffering which actually shifts the focus from the actual lesson that needs to be learned to “showing” who is in control. In punishment based parenting, few words of explanation are given by the parent. Children are often left confused and unsure of their behavior, and it is given out of anger or frustration. Parenting and the way one chooses to parent is so crucial to child development; it affects every aspect of the child’s life. Parenting styles are choices and there is no right or wrong way to raise a child. In society there may be, but it only matters how to the person raising their child. There are endless ways people raise their children and even though we have four main parenting styles, sometimes many parents don’t even fit into one. Parents should just strive to raise their children as well as they can. The biggest thing a parent can do for their child is to teach them, support them, and be there for them. “At the end of the day, the most overwhelming key to a child's success is the positive involvement of parents.” - Jane D.
