The Things I Carry Poem
The Things I Carry Poem
I carry a heart
An entity that makes impulsive emotional decisions
An entity that lets me carry hatred, love, jealousy,
Charity and a willingness to help.
At times it can be fragile,
And at times it’s needy for protection.
Protection from this world of corrupt men
Which has brought me to such a sad state,
From the noble values that I once had.

I carry a mind
An inquisitive mind that desire to understand
That is very powerful.
What I think on is what my future will be.
What I meditate on is what I will become.
What is in my mind is what I will do.
It lets me carry a Cynical attitude,
And lets me carry Caution and a Sense of humor.

I carry a purse
That holds all my necessities.
Necessities those are sometimes not essential
But it aids me in carrying my lip gloss, keys, wallet, and a mirror.

The things I carry define who I am
As I think with my heart at times,
My mind helps me feel my thoughts,
And reminds me never to forget my purse
And the things I carry.

The reason I am admonished to think on good, pure, worthwhile things Is because of the power of the mind That makes me into what I "dream" of. I take every thought
Every tangible and intangible that I carry captive
To control my thoughts rather than have my thoughts control me
To control what I carry rather than being carried with what I posses
And to control my emotions rather than have my emotions conquer

The second thing I chose to put in my bag are some pictures of my family. I have my grandparents, all my aunts and uncles, my mother and sister, my fiancé and baby, and finally my dog Dori. The reason I chose these pictures to put in my bag is because I couldn’t stress enough how much my family members mean to me. I have had several friends either lose their brother, mother, or even grandparents, and it makes me WANT to cherish every moment with my family and REALIZE that I should. It also makes me thank God for the family that he blessed me with.…

The Things They Carried is a novel by Tim O'Brien that makes someone face reality. War is crazy. Some things seem true and other things they just don’t know what to think. Surrealism means not real. Surrealism has a big part in the war. The hard thing is figuring out what’s not true and what is. It can be tricky, some things that may be false sound like they can’t be made up. Then that’s when their imagination takes over. They have to fight with their imagination and comprehend what they think is real.…

In the story "The Things They Carried," by Tim O'Brien, discusses a group of American soldiers marching through Vietnam during the war. The narrator is describing the items that each of the soldiers carries with him during the march through Vietnam. The items that the soldiers carried with them are both symbolic and physical items and what these things are depends upon the individual soldier. They carry the basic necessities for survival and the bare minimum to make their life as livable and comfortable as possible. They also carry memories, and fears, and it is these symbolic items like these that are the prime focus of the story. The weight of these items is as real as that of any physical ones, and unlike those physical objects, they do not go away.…

War has always been something that seemed pointless to me; it seemed like violence with no other purpose but to harm people. I felt sorry for the people who had to go to war, for the people who died, and for people who could never go back to normal after a war ended, because of the mental or physical impact it had on them. Howard told us his story, his opinion about war, and the book “The Things they carried”. He changed my way of looking at war a lot, partly even my opinion about war.…

We all carry things. Some people carry things that mean more to them than others. Every person carries items they can hold and have items that burden them from the inside. Personally, I always carry an actual hair tie on my wrist. For most girls that’s fairly normal, but I have one at all times because I love to work out. Weight lifting is one of the best thing I ever found to do. By carrying the hair tie with me, I’m always able to just get ready to work out and get to it.…

In “The Things They Carried,” a short story by Tim O’Brien, the reader is able to see, in great detail, each of the characters ways of dealing with the atrocities of the Vietnam War by what they choose to carry; how symbolically they use these objects as a means for remembrance of what they have left behind, to escape what they deal with each day, and for some, a false sense of security and/or control over the violence and death that surrounds them.…
