Once I saw my father almost lose his life for a lady he didn’t know. These are the kind of experiences that make me surprised he lived till this age. As people entered this place today, many walked up to me offering their condolences and mentioning all the various things that my father had done for them. Some said he was a brother to them while others hardly knew him. That’s the charm about my father. You didn’t have to know him before he sacrificed something for you. I used to dislike that side of him as he hardly had time for me. It wasn’t until we came to America that…

My thoughts on the things they carried are as followed: I believe that the soldiers carry personal things to remind them what they have to live for. War is a mental game about what side wants it more. I think that the things they carry push them harder to stay alive. They carry weapons and necessities to help them achieve their goal of staying alive.…

When referring to the items in the story the narrator uses them to symbolize, the characters, photos, and letters. “The items structure both the story and the book.”(Henningfeld 1) Allowing a great deal of vision in the story, the narrator shares his stories and as well as other characters who also tell their stories. Soldiers items that they are carrying is more of a metaphor because what each soldier is actually carrying is fear, the feeling of being alive, and his haunting memories.…

It is quite interesting to look at my life thus far and see how specific things helped me – or forced me – to develop. Every sad or hurtful thing included in this paper has given me a more positive quality in some way. I do not regret anything that I have done because it all has shaped me into the woman I am today, and I think that I like her. Parents play a tremendous role in how one develops, I see now why secure attachments are so important. Parents are the first line of defense when it comes to a person’s psychological well-being. If parents do not do a good job of protecting their child, it will lead to difficulties later in life. The role of stress and trauma are closely related in development, after all one cannot have trauma without stress. From writing this paper I have learned that it is the biggest heartaches that make you stronger as a person. And even though you may not see the positive impact of the people close to you on a day-to-day basis, they help shape you as a person. I am incredibly thankful for the few people who accept me for who I have become and will treasure them forever. I may be a fatherless “daddy’s girl,” but I will not let that stop me from striving to make him…

I never thought me, of all people, would experience such a sorrowful day. I have tried to forget it time and time again; but the reality is I will always remember every miniscule detail, moment, word, and facial expression on that particular day. My heart managed to shatter into a million pieces, leaving me without a reason to pursue my existence. My salty tears freely rolled down my warm cheeks, causing my eyes to burn sensationally. I remember mourning on the comforting shoulders of my family members, as they too were consumed by their feelings. The most valuable lesson that beared a reservation in my spirit was to cherish every moment and loved one, for tomorrow is not guaranteed to anyone. I wish I could have fathom this reality before the climactic tragedy struck me like a ton of bricks. Although death is normal, it seemed almost foreign when it abducted the life of my favorite uncle.…

The characters of the story “The Things They Carried” mainly were inflicted with two kinds of weights: physical and emotional burden. In the first chapter, Tim O’ Brien sets up his storytelling by writing long lists of the things the soldiers were carrying in the War in Vietnam. Beyond the basic gears of war, he goes on mentioning the personal luggage that varied from person to person, mostly depending on their necessity, helping the reader to get to know the protagonists in a deeper sense this way. To know their souls, their customs, and the way they would probably live their “normal” lives. A letter, a photograph, a bible, the drugs, condoms, comic books, and a pair of moccasins are all life-story-telling property.…

Secound important item I will bring would be a journal. I think it's important to bring a journal during a war because I can write down what's going on in the war and write down how im surviving. Bringing a journal is important because you can write letters to relatives back home and write how your doing in the war and how much you miss them. One of my favourite reasons to bring a journal when your in a war is if you survived the war and let's say a the war is over and a few years have past and I have kids, I can always read one of the pages to the kids of what happend when I was in war. These are the reasons why I think bringing a journal would be a important item to bring during a war, it keeps memories of back then what happend during a war and you can show your family and friends your journal.…

Each physical item has its purpose as in why I carry it. Its pretty basic too, I carry my keys to my car, which I love, since me and my car have seen a lot together and she brings me many places in exchange for her favorite type of drink, also known as gasoline. It’s got a special feeling to it every time I get in it. Just knowing you did all the modifications to it yourself to define your version of perfection for that vehicle.…

As we know in a family, there always have a stern father and a compassionate mother. However, my father is not that stern. He always can meet all my requirements and give me the best things. Every time when I heard “Father” by Chopstick Brothers, I am touched and my mood is heavy. The whole song describes a story that is similar to me. When I was third grade my father came to America, I have not seemed him until I came here. Even though my father was far away at that time, I still could feel the love from him. My father still gave a call every day, although China has time difference with the United States. No matter how tired he was. He was cared about me and never forgot my birthday. Until the day when I saw my father in John F. Kennedy International Airport, I could not believe that person is my father. I saw there had grey hair in my father’s hair. I wanted to cry at that time, but I…

The excerpt of “The Things They Carried” inspired me to write about minimalism and the burden that excessive amounts of possessions can create and how ultimately it can weigh down an individual’s happiness. It inspired me to write about this topic by listing off all the things the soldiers in the story had to carry and how much each thing weighed. It made me think about how unhappy carrying the heavy equipment might have made each soldier and how unhappy I was with the things weighing me down. To introduce an audience who knew nothing about minimalism I’d introduce them to it by talking about the primary purpose of minimalism. The primary purpose of minimalism is to declutter a person’s life and get rid of unessential things that just end…
