The Theme of Kate Chopin’s “the Storm”
Kate Chopin in “the Storm” uses symbolism in characters to develop the theme that marriages are not perfect. Although there is a physical storm in the story, there is also a storm of emotions. Chopin is able to convey the emotions of her characters throughout the story because the storm that takes place at the very beginning of her story. As the storm approaches Calixta is home sewing, while husband Bobinot and son Bibi are out at the store. Bobinot notices the “sombre clouds that were rolling with sinister intention from the west, accompanied by a sullen, threatening roar.” (page 394) The description makes it obvious that it’s a threatening, dangerous storm. The father and son decide to remain at the store till the storm passed by. Calixta is waiting at home sewing as time passed by. She doesn’t notice the storm approach; however, she does notice that she “felt very warm and often stopped to mop her face” (page 394) which implies that a storm is on the way. Calixta later realizes the importance of the situation and quickly prepares the house for the storm. As she steps outside she sees Alcee and “the big rain drops began to fall” (page 395). It is no coincidence that Alcee and the storm arrive at the same time; although Alcee’s intentions were to remain outside, the storm gains strength and he must come in. Calixta stands at the window worried for her family, Alcee joins her and stands behind her as the storm continues. In the distance a bolt struck a tree at the edge of the field “The playing of the lighting was incessant…It filled all visible space with a blinding glare and the crash seemed to invade the very boards they stood upon.” (page 395). Chopin uses the storm to symbolize that the storm is full of electricity, incessant electricity, this spark between Calixta and Alcee which threatens to blind them and cannot be denied.
As the lightning strikes the tree, Calixta staggers backward into Alcee’s arms. The storm cannot be avoided, the pounding

In Kate Chopin’s “The Storm,” we see a multitude of literary themes. The most important among those is her use of local color. This short story was written in the late nineteenth century at a time when women were to be seen, not heard. Chopin had a different outlook on life and it showed in her writing. Though some believe it may not have been her intention to use local color in her stories, she does. We see local color in the setting she chooses, the descriptive colors she uses, the plot of the story, and also though the narrator’s eyes.…

Weather affects the lives of everyone. When the weather turns foul, it makes life more difficult. Stormy weather in Tony's dreams represents the conflict in his life, and the lives of those around him. One example of the weather in his dreams is the wind. In one of Tony's dreams the wind is used to represent conflict that disrupts the peace that is a still lake. "There was a howling wind as the moon rose and it's powers pulled at the still waters of the lake."(Anaya 120) The wind here is used to represent forces of disturbance caused by nuclear testing taking place south of the town, just as wind kicks up dust and blurs the view. Another element of storms is thunder and lightning. In Tony's dream he sees, ".....a flash of lightning struck and out of the thunder a dark figure stepped forth. It was Ultima......I sought more answers, but she was gone, evaporated into a loud noise."(Anaya 71) Lightning can offer glimpses of illumination, but then darkness returns, and the noise of the thunder that follows deafens the ears. This represents the moments of good that can occur within the midst of conflict. Ultima's appearance gives Tony a glimpse of where he needs to search for innocence, but he is still confused from this encounter. He continues to search for answers. Another significannot…

    The Storm

In the story “The Storm”, I believe the physical setting plays a large part. The storm begins to occur during the day and we know this because it is bright enough for Bobinot to notice the change in the clouds, and also because at the end of the story it states that the storm was over and the sun was turning the glistening green world into a palace of gems. The storm was basically a key force in the events that took place throughout the story. For starters everything occurred because of the storm. For instance, Bobinot and Bibi would have not stayed at the store if they had not seen the clouds rolling in. If Bobinot and Bibi had not seen the storm coming around, they would have been at home when Calixta’sex-flame stopped by their house to also seek shelter from the rain. The setting influences the characters behavior toward each other as well. The fact that Alcee, Calixta’s ex-flame had to seek shelter from the rain in her home, gave them both the opportunity to confront their old feelings alone for the first time since Calixta had married Bobinot. At the same time that Calixta and Alcee are forced to be alone in the home together, she is also worried about the safety of her husband and son. The fact that the storm is heavily coming down affects all the characters emotional state. Bobinot and Bibi were facing some emotional state because they knew Calixta would be feeling uneasy wondering where they were. At home Calixta is wondering if Bobinot and Bibi were able to seek shelter from the storm in time, or were they caught in the rain. I feel that Calixta’s emotional state makes her vulnerable to the comfort of Alcee’s arms around her body. Her vulnerability motivated both her and Alcee into confronting their own storms within their lives.…

Calixta was at home sewing while Bobinot and Bibi were at Friedheimer 's store, and she did not realize that a serious, yet pleasurable, storm was fast approaching. Once she noticed that it was getting darker she quickly set about closing doors and windows. Calixta remembered hanging Bobinot 's Sunday coat on the front gallery and as she was retrieving it Alcee rode up seeking shelter from the storm. "May I come and wait on your gallery till the storm is over, Calixta?" he asked. Although Alcee wished to remain on the gallery, Calixta insisted that he come inside and stay until the storm passed. Although it was dark outside, inside Alcee admired the fact that "she was a revelation in that dim, mysterious chamber; as white as the couch she lay upon." Calixta realized that "her firm, elastic flesh that was knowing for the first time it 's birthright, was like a creamy lily that the sun invites to contribute its breath and perfume to the underlying life of the world." "Her mouth," unlike the torrential rains, "was a fountain of delight."…

Kate Chopin uses the approaching storm as a symbol of bringing the main characters back together. The two main characters, whom are former lovers are Calixta and Alcee. Alcee was coming upon Calixta’s house during the time of the storm and had to take shelter in her home while it passed. The storm is the most significant symbol in the story because it is portrayed as the reason for bringing Alcee and Calixta back together. Alcee and Calixta had not seen each other “very often since her marriage, and never alone” (Chopin 122) which made this approaching storm very convenient for the two because her husband and son were held up at the store and Alcee’s family was out of town. Also, in the story, Chopin describes the storm as “crashing torrents” (Chopin 123) which could symbolize the passion the two have for one another.…

The storm will probably continue slowly northward and its effects will be felt as far as the lower portion of the middle Atlantic coast by Friday night." (Page 113)"My family pleaded with me to remain at home, said A.R. Wolfram, a Galveston shopkeeper, but I was determined to go to town. I tried to reassure them and promised that at the first signs of the storm's approach, I would return home. He did go home, for lunch, but left again to return to work, despite the tearful pleadings of my wife and children." (Page 150)Hey Spencer!' one man shouted from across the room.
