I had always been told this book was incredible and I never read it because it just didn't seem like my type of book, but this course gave me the opportunity to read this book and really reflect on it. I suppose there are many different ways that I could use this book in both my personal and professional life. All of the different things going on in this book really helped me to notice some of the signs that children who suffer from abuse and neglect will often show. Children coming to school in smelly clothes, having random bruises appearing each week, looks of malnourishment, change of bruise stories, etc. are all tell-tale signs that maybe there's a bigger issue going on in the home than meets the eye. I have a passion for Social Work and working with children and adults who have been affected by alcohol and substance abuse is where I want to spend most of my time, so this book really hit me in my emotions and pulled at my heart strings. This book has opened up my eyes to see the cruelty that we face in this world and that nobody is safe, not even a small child. If nothing else, this book at least has made me want to be nicer to children and to make sure I can identify signs of abuse and neglect in children. This book makes me so much more excited to be a helper after reading it because I'm going to strive to get victims of this severe abuse out of the home and into a safe area. Also, this book makes…
Throughout Love Medicine, the majority of the novel was written from the point of view of one character…
Jeannette and her family have to face many different issues. These issues include dealing with the consequences of not paying bills, stealing, and running from your problems. Throughout the book, Jeannette has trouble coping with her difficult life and all the obstacles that she must face. While reading the book, I noticed myself comparing life as it was then and as it was now. Jeannette Walls, as an author, does a phenomenal job of contrasting life then and how it is now. Although during both life today and then have many obstacles, difficulties, and issues, different issues are faced. A lot of these issues I noticed were actually relevant to my life. These issues include communal, racial, political, economical, and…
2. I find it hard to believe that so many unique situations occurred in what the book seems to portray as a one day’s work. I do not necessarily think the characters are not real and believable, but some of the stories seem way out of ordinary. I can relate mostly to all of the terminal patients with cancer, as I see many of these patients working in the recovery room. It is not uncommon to receive patients from the operating room that were open and closed because there was not much that could be done for them.…
A few drinks and drugs every once in a while, slowly becomes more and more. We see this in through Chris Herren's story. An amazing basketball player who was one of the best, and so well known for it. He speaks on the difficulties he faced throughout high school and college. The 10 year battle he faced with alcohol and drugs. It put a toll on his body. He says how he became popular, and would go to parties. Drinking, and smoking some nights that he did not get to sleep. This shows how it affected him and his performance. It did not just hurt him, but his teammates. With little, to no sleep, he did not do his best, the team needed him. When one man is off, it messes everyone up. He says that if you are in something that stresses you out, you…
Over 20 million Americans above the age of 12 have an addiction, and 90% of those with an addiction began drinking, smoking, or using illicit drugs before the age of 18. Many of these addictions are products of peer pressure and students attempting to be the life of the party. In Cole Meyers “Addiction” he shows us how the continued use of drugs can give one a short term gains to increase his or her social status; however, in the long term, addiction strips the individual of his or her identity.…
- I thought the author did a good job making the story realistic through the dialogue, characters, and plot. (esp. the characters’ individual situations like Juliana’s desire to quit, or Embry’s attitude towards everything)…
The chapters are based on certain struggles people are facing in their lives. Some of the chapters’ topics include pregnancy, eating disorders, abuse, neglect, and many, many other topics. Although the book doesn’t give off a very positive vibe, it shows me what challenges people may be facing and which I don’t know anything about them at all. I’m…
Another problem is that this book had poor character development. Mary is referred as a criminal and leaving her town after killing her husband .Crabbe’s mom is clueless on what is going on with his son’s life, his dad is rude and ungrateful. His family does not show much support to his son. He’s addicted to alcohol and telling young grade 9’s to drink and always constantly drinking and in need of it 24/7 is horrible. Crabbe has also left home and running away is showing bad decisions to the youth. It’s giving those ideas on what to do if they hate there family or get depressed. This book is just setting bad examples towards the youth.…
When the novel debuted, America was still having ongoing racial issues especially in the southern region. So of course there would be some sort of problem created. As for the language and content, the novel was meant for an older crowd. So I cannot see what the actual problem is because most teens now are doing what they were doing in the book.…
After reading this article, explain what you think the key issues are that are being discussed. In your answer, be sure to fully describe the social problems you see reflected in the story.…
One major problem I had with this book was just how useless the adults were in this story. Most of the parents were horrible ones, that beat their kids…
It is a very interesting piece of literature because the story is vague enough to create a heated debate whether she had an abortion or not in the end. We can make up the future of their relationships in our imaginations and how she might be going to live. It enabled us to figure out what the story were based on, and it showed us a very realistic feature of our very own world we live in and how some people are irresponsible and so self-centered.…
I liked how vivid the author was about the things he encountered. His inner thoughts is what also made this novel an interesting read for me because it showed readers what he was really feeling. When I read Dave’s thought and feelings about being locked in a bathroom with ammonia, it brought tears to my eyes. At first, the brutal details in this book made it hard for me to believe that any child endured such pain for so long. I couldn’t believe how long Dave was abused. I just couldn’t understand what human being does this to a child—what mother does this to a…
5.4)Challenges and trials: when she escapes to NY her brother end up coming up after high school as well and then eventually so do her crazy parents. She learns to cope with her strange parents “wanting to be poor” ideas her parents want to be poor so they dig through dumpsters and don’t shower and she doesn’t understand why they want to do that. She has to cope with their ways of life and still create…
