The Theme Of Courage In To Kill A Mockingbird By Harper Lee
What is courage? In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee describes courage as continuing to do something even when one knows the outcome is not going to be the way one wants it to be. Courage is not always about winning and losing. It is about being able to finish what one starts and doing what one thinks is right when others might think it is wrong. As Atticus stated, ‘’Simply because we were licked a hundred years ago before we started is no reason for us not to try to win, Atticus said’’(pg.87). Atticus, Mrs. Dubose, and Boo showed great acts of courage.
Atticus showed courage by representing Tom Robinson in front of the jury and everybody else. Atticus knew he was not going to win the trial but he continued to fight for Tom Robinson anyway. He believed that Tom would not do such a thing. From the way Mayella was telling the story about what happened, Atticus could tell it was a made up story. Boo Radley protected Jem and Scout on halloween night when they were attacked by Bob Ewell. Boo showed no fear while battling against Bob while trying to save the children. Boo showed tremendous courage because after all those years in the house, he came out to help Jem and Scout. Nobody else helped but Boo. Scout and Jem did not know who he was until Scout spotted him behind the door, Scout said ‘’hey Boo’’(pg.311).
