The Term Castle Vs. Post-Conquest Castle
The term castle originated from the Anglo-Norman French word for castellum, meaning fort (Oxford Dictionary, 2015). Forts were popular in England before the Norman Conquest. The concept of the castle was introduced to England by the Normans, which is a misconception. In the simplest form a castle is a ‘fortified residence’ (Davill, 2002, 77). With consideration of earlier structures, there is a correlation between structures before the conquest and post-conquest castle. Essentially structures such as forts and burhs, have the requirements which are associated to a home, but also has defensive features. Furthermore, small settlements, such as Goltho and Yeavering have similar characteristics of the castle. This issue with looking at the antecedent
