The Tempest was written during the years 1610-1611. The Tempest is Shakespeare's last play. The play has many parts that represent groups of people during the colonization of Virginia. Shakespeare created different people to emphasize the different influences that were present during the colonization of the new world. The Tempest can be approached as a fascinating tale that served as a masquerade for the creation of a new society in America” (Takaki 28).
The Tempest serves as a great reflection of how the english reacted and treated the new land and each other. An example of this occurs when the men are on the land. Gonzalo,Sebastian and Alonso were happy to be alive after a huge storm. Some of them wanted to just leave, other thought the land they were on was a great find. Alonso(current king of naples) and sebastian( the king’s brother) who is persuaded to attempt to kill his brother for the throne by antonio. This happens when antonio and sebastian are the two awake with the (Ariel’s presences) -unconscious king of naples and son of the king: Ferdinand (Heir to the throne). Caliban is introduced at this point of the play. Caliban is a monstrous, uncivilized, the son of a witch, perhaps half-man and half-monster. Caliban is a “Savage” in the story, Caliban represents what the english thought of the indians during the colonization and the controlling of wild environments. Caliban like some indians were educated by prospero(the English). Caliban learned the language prospero and miranda spoke, with this allowed caliban to take advantage of the language. When caliban tries to rape miranda and is imprisoned, Caliban viewed prospero as oppressive. “You taught me language, and my profit on’t. Is I know how to curse.
