The modern world has gone through many changes to become how it is today. Many of these changes were from events that have happened from the past. This has affected how we live now. Both time and writing and many other aspects of life were developed from the Sumerians. This is how important they were and still are to our civilization. Without these ancient people, our world wouldn’t be how it is today. The Sumerians were one of the earliest urban societies to emerge from the world. They were the very ones that developed “a writing system whose wedge-shaped strokes would influence the style of scripts [...] in the next 3000 years.” This quote from the text shows that their writing system was considered successful and has most likely branched into many other writing systems. It is always important to keep track of time. However, did you know that the Sumerians were one of the first to create the idea of time? “It was the Sumerians who divided the day from the night by time, by the increments of sixty-second minutes and sixty-minute hours which made up twelve hours of night and twelve hours of the day.” Until this day, we still have the same measurements of time because it was the Sumerians idea. This is a significant change because without time, most of us wouldn’t know what to do during a typical day. In conclusion, the Sumerians contributions greatly impacted the modern world. Even though they don’t exist anymore, their inventions and ideas are still lying around today. It has changed the world for many years in a positive way. Without writing and time, the modern world would most probably have trouble communicating with one another. Our lifestyle may have also been much different without the Sumerians inventions.
