The Story Of Robert Herrick's No Pain, No Gain
In the second century a Rabbi named Ben Hei Hei said, “According to the pain is the gain.” Over the following centuries this quote evolved into the famous expression, “No Pain, No Gain.” I wonder today what the inspiration in Rabbi Ben Hei Hei’s life was that lead to his quote. In 1660, poet Robert Herrick wrote a two line poem titled, “No pains, No Gains.” The last line read, “Man’s fate is according to his pains.” Again, I wonder what was Robert Herrick’s inspiration. Did the Rabbi and Mr. Herrick face trials and pains in their life? Most likely, yes. The better question would be were their trials and pains emotional or physical? Trials and pains are my inspiration for associating the expression “No Pain, No Gain” with my road to college. My physical …show more content…
Although my surgery and recovery were successful, I would never lead a pain free life. My pain was not as severe, but it still remained a prominent part of me. Over the following years I had regular MRI’s to monitor the continued success of my surgery. I was told I could not jump on trampolines or play a contact sport. I never cared about trampolines, but as I grew older I became obsessed with football. Pain or not, I really wanted to play …show more content…
Pain has been a constant part of who I am and a constant reminder of who I want to be. I’m not a strong academic student, but my goal to play college football has served as my academic motivation. In a way, academics is one of my trials and pains. Make no mistake, my inspiration behind the expression “No Pain, No Gain” is the physical pain that reminds me daily not to give up. Not to fall victim and walk life on a crutch. The day may come when I will in fact be disabled, but on that day I will have no regrets. Through pain I will gain satisfaction, pride, and a college

A few hours later when I went to the hospital, I discovered that I had torn my Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL). Initially, I did not know what to expect from the situation, but I came to realize how much it would affect my life. The ACL functions as a ligament that connects the tibia and the femur. It provides stability in the knee, and with this injury, I could not participate in competitive soccer for 10 months. To undergo this painful experience at such a young age is extremely difficult; however, I chose to embrace the situation rather than let it destroy me. I could no longer play the sport I loved, but I could not change anything about that; I could only control my attitude in this predicament. I went above and beyond at every physical therapy appointment, no matter how strenuous/painful the workouts were. Times frequently came…

Vince Lombardi once said, "The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand." I admire the words written here and try to apply them in my everyday life. Now that I am part of the Pasadena City College Radiology Program I find these words more important than ever. The only thing that is not fitting about this quote is that when I put my mind to something, as though I have for school, and someone else is depending on my actions, I will not lose. Not only will my patients rely on me to provide them with the best care possible but also I will someday have a family that relies on my success in the field. This being said, even though I'm only a handful of months in I've dedicated my self to this program by setting personal goals, some of which I've already achieved and some of which I've yet to achieve but have made a promise to myself to accomplish.…

The only problem was my phone, backpack, all my football gear was still at the field. I remember wishing my mom was here and soon enough my mom came into the room. I was so happy she came because I didn't know anyone there and it was scary being alone. Not a single coach came with me. After the doctors said that I am good to leave we soon left. The doctors said to not do any activities in a week. With that being I gave it a week but I should have waited some more time.…

When I stood at the bottom I did not think I could make it. half way up, I knew that I could not make it. Now, standing at the top, I look behind me at the amazing challenge that I have just conquered. Not only is the hill at Eau Claire an infamous feat that every student must traverse, but it is also a metaphor for every hardship that has entered into my life. One hardship I have faced, was my sports injuries during high school. My junior year track season started off being the best experience i’ve had. Unfortunately, this time was cut short. I ripped a ligament in my leg ending my entire spring season. I was angry at the world asking, “why me”. However, I knew I still had a team depending on me. Day in, and day out, I would show up to practice…

My mother decided I should see a specialist in Nashville after not being satisfied with our local doctor’s diagnosis. When I arrived at the doctor's office, I explained to the doctor in detail what had happened and he immediately recommended an MRI. Vividly I remember laying down as they pushed me into the colossal machine. It was miserable lying completely still like a statue for an hour while hearing the loud clicking noise of the massive machine. A week later, I went back to the doctor to get the results. He informed me that I had a tear in my labrum and that it would require surgery. But it wasn't the worst news. He then explained that he did not recommend that I play football ever again. When I heard those words, it was like the entire world stopped for a few seconds. I was heartbroken. Not being able to play the sport I fell in love with when I was just 7 years old made me feel dejected. I didn't know how I could live without playing football, but I had to accept my new reality. I had the surgery at the beginning of my sophomore year. After months of physical therapy, I was ready to find a new sport to play. Shortly thereafter, a friend introduced me to the game of…

I was at practice one Wednesday night of January the 11th, in the middle of a defensive drill In which I planted my foot and put all my weight on it ready to turn the ball handler. Then made a quick few steps then dropped to the hardwood I was in a world of hurt. I quickly grabbed at my leg grimacing with pain as my head laid back. I tried to hold back tears, after receiving help to sit down I could feel the cooling of ice on my leg, however, I wasn't able to pinpoint the exact part the pain was coming from. My dad had to come and pick me up and I could not put any weight whatsoever on my leg for literally three days. My mom took me to get an x-ray the next day, the doctor said: “Well the x-rays don't show anything let’s wait a while and if you still have any complications then we’ll schedule an MRI.” About a week and a half went by until I finally got the MRI it took about an hour and the machine kept giving off these strange loud noises it was weird. Then we had to wait for a few days to get the results, It was that Saturday at six o'clock that me and my brother and sister were at my grandma’s then my mom called asking to speak to me I picked up the phone not expecting what I was about to hear, “Cameron, the results came back and you have a completely torn ACL, you need to come home and get back on the crutches.” It felt like I just got shot, I was not expecting a torn…

My sophomore year while playing in a football game, I tackled a player from the other team right before half-time. While I was making the tackle, I felt a pop in my knee. It wasn’t very painful because of the adrenaline in my system at the time but the next day the pain came. It felt like there was a rubber band getting caught on my knee and coming off almost every step I took. I just put this pain aside through part of basketball season until the pain was too much and I went to get a check up, then a MRI, then before i knew it I had to get surgery for a torn meniscus. This ended my basketball season. After surgery I went to my rehab physical therapist Dr. Marty in Centralia. He got my knee back in good working order after…

The lively figures of speech in Herrick's "Delight in Disorder" show his sensual delight in the little things in life. The oxymorons, animations, images, and paradox in this poem display the author's enjoyment of true uniqueness. The animations in "Delight in Disorder" show how the speaker sees the clothing as having a will of it's own that makes the outfit more "bewitch[ing]" (13). For example, the author cites a "tempestuous petticoat" and a "careless shoestring" as things that cause the woman's dress to be unique and intriguing (9, 10). Through his use of the animation "tempestuous petticoat", the author shows the reader that the petticoat not only flows freely and wildly, but the woman is also free and wild (9). The "careless shoestring" shows the how the disarray of the woman and her dress make her unusual (10).…
