The Spirit Spartans: My Experience In High School
I am involved in numerous clubs and activities both inside and outside of school, but my favorite this year was being a part of the Spirit Spartans, a group of Senior students who plan, organize, and promote tailgates, student attendance at games, and themes at all sporting events. Some of my favorite memories over the past few years have been at Turpin games, and I hope to help my classmates and underclassmen make those memories as well.

One of my most memorable high school experiences took place in a football stadium an hour away from home in the middle of a corn field. It was my Junior year, a Friday night in the middle of October, and in true Ohio fashion, it was raining and barely above freezing. Members of the Spirit Spartans that year convinced my friends and I to attend. The game was incredible; it was back and forth all four quarters and all tied up with thirty seconds left in the game. With the clock running down, a Turpin receiver made a diving one-handed catch in the endzone to win the game. The stands went crazy and that excitement lasted all season, as the Spartans were undefeated in the regular season and lost only to future state champions in the tournament. I wholeheartedly believe that a vital part to the team's success was the student encouragement at games. As an athlete myself, a crowd of spirited classmates at a game can really ignite the team.

The best part of my freshman basketball team was traveling to different location with my team. While we travel on the road, we would often sing, and dance on the bus. Coach Belford would often go over plays with the team before the games on the bus. We would look out the bus windows to look at the new environment. Me and a couple of my teammates would stretch on the bus before the games. My favorite thing to do on the bus, was to listen to music. Listening to music always hype me up before the game. It was like pregame ritual for every game I played. Sometimes we would go out to eat after the games as a team. When we win most of the time we would sing are school anthem. Think about it now my freshmen basketball road trip were the best trip I had during my high school…

The courage of the Spartan soldiers and their loyalty to Sparta is correctly shown in the movie. At the start of the movie it shows a Spartan spy who was captured by the Persians. A Persian soldier tells Xerxes that they have used all of their best torture techniques on the Spartan, but he still will not talk. While we do not know if this actually happened, it gives us insight to the loyalty that Spartans had. Spartans were renowned for being fearless soldiers that would fight until the death. In the movie they fought until the very last Spartan was killed. Death in battle was glorified in Spartan culture, while retreat was shameful. A Spartan who fled battle would have that held over them for the rest of their life.…

Once you go to a basketball game, you will most defiantly have school pride. It’s one thing to go out and support your team just because it’s just that, you're team. It’s completely different when your school basketball team is really good, it is very exciting to watch the games, to say the least. A basketball game was the first Polk State function I had attended. Even though I knew not a single person in the stands I kept finding myself on my feet cheering on the team and booing the referees for bogus calls, I had school pride. I sat down in silence for a moment because I figured everyone in the stands was just starring at me and that the game had come to a screeching halt, the players and all. But I look around me and I am surrounded by cheering students, parents and teachers. Thats when I truly realized how much school pride there is a Polk State.…

High school football in small towns like mine is a big deal. While I was growing up in Hugoton, Kansas, a town of about of about 4,000 people, the community was very supportive. Many people in my community knew me because I was a standout in football. I was a captain my senior year of high school, so I received the opportunity to help lead my team. At games and at practice, I tried to the of my best ability to motivate the younger players on my team to give it all they had. As a role player, I was expected to make big plays in the game. To an offensive and defensive lineman, big plays consist of making big time blocks for my team and getting off block to make tackles. My team and coaches relied on me to do so. I loved…

Children tend to go out for sports to make friends, improve relationships, become better at the sport, and to stay in shape. No matter what the reason is when you join the sport, you will find out that you gained numerous friends over the course of the season. As every sports season comes around the corner, you can visualize how close people on the same teams grow. At our high school, people eat with their teams, lift with their teams, practice with their teams, and play with their teams. The environment is set up to create friendships. Being a senior in high school, I have had the opportunity to participate in multiple team sports. Throughout my high school experience, I have noticed is that the teams who grow the closest, have the greatest success. One piece of evidence is our soccer team. When I came into high school, we had the opportunity to meet new coaches. Coach Garza and Coach Javi, the soccer coaches, are no doubt, the best coaches I have ever had the chance to be taught by. They both possess the rare trait of being able to bond kids together. The soccer team I am on has the strongest bond I have ever seen. Since I joined the team as a freshman, we have made two consecutive state trips, which were the first and second in school history. We also achieved the runner-up status in the championship game. If there were one trait I could relate our success to, it would be the bond we share as a…

My favorite extracurricular activity is the debate team, which I first joined as a high school freshman. I moved to a new school that year and was a shy, withdrawn young girl who wasn't quite sure where I would fit in.
