The Soccer Life
I was five years old and it was the first time I had ever stepped on a field of any kind. I had no athletic talent and could barely tie my shoes, which made me wonder what went through my parents’ head to put me on a field. At this time I was living in Hilton Head, South Carolina, and I was playing on a baseball field, which they had transformed with many cones to make a soccer field. At this practice they taught me the very basics of the game of soccer. I had a very detailed knowledge of soccer before going to this first practice. I am half English, so I had been watching soccer since I was born. I could kick a soccer ball since I began walking. This was only the beginning to what I could and would accomplish until this moment in my life.
I played at the recreational level of soccer from when I was five years old until I was about nine years old. The most exciting part about that playing level for me was that I was one of the best on the team so I got to play the majority of the games to help my team score a lot of goals. At that point in my career I was playing as a left forward. When I was between my fourth and fifth grade year in school, I had the opportunity to try out for a travel soccer club called the Lakeway Legacy. I decided that since I was trying out for a new team I would maybe try out a new position as the goalkeeper. The kids on the team then included Isaac, Matt, Andy, Grant, Colin, Preston, and Britt. We had very successful soccer seasons every single year we played. We were always one of the best teams in the state, and all the other teams were scared of us. We made it to the state tournament almost every year and my last season playing for them we had the opportunity to go to the Southeast Regional Soccer Tournament and we won one of our games and lost two. Even though the losses outweighed the wins, it was one of the greatest achievements I had achieved in my life.
The moment I walked into the doors of West High School I knew I wanted to play

It had been a long and tough game. The sun was beating down on us and we were all tired when all of a sudden the game’s time limit ran out. We were all tense because no one knew the score. The ref said that the game was tied. We all exhaled. We hadn't even realized we were holding our breaths. That meant we all had to do PKs (Penalty kicks) until one team won.…

When I was ten years old I tried out for my local travel soccer team. I did not expect to make it, but by some stroke of luck I did. I started playing and it was not what I was expecting. In the past I averaged a hat trick every game, but travel soccer was a lot different. I started playing defense, but that might be an overstatement, because I did not get a whole lot of minutes. I knew that if I wanted to play more I was going to have to put in more work outside of practice. I started practicing everyday switching from running, to foot skills, to agility training. I probably spent more time complaining about it and there were a few time that my parents had to push me to practice, but I knew that I had to put in the work.…

My club soccer team sat in the same Taco Mac to watch every game the national team played in that 2011 World Cup. As most of us were just starting high school that summer, we could relate to Morgan. I was a rising freshmen and being the youngest in the school trying out for a varsity sport is always hard. Once I received news I was on the Varsity soccer team I was excited but I knew that was only the beginning. I would be starting center mid with two other seniors who had experience and been on the team for three years. The season was tough after losing in the first round of the state playoffs but in the end I scored 13 goals for the team my freshmen year. Alex Morgan’s effort really pushed me that season. I kept reminding myself of her accomplishments and how I could easily reach some of my own.…

My life has revolved around soccer since I was four years old. My whole family was born into the sport and I’m so thankful that I have the support from my family and friends to continue to follow my dream in playing college soccer. I believe my life would not be the same without participating in the sport I love and playing with the people I grew up with. I wouldn’t have met half the people I know now. All my teammate’s families that treat me like their family would have been just imaginary. I wouldn’t have a second family to fall back on when I need. Soccer had made me for who I am. The reason I’m so competed and driven is because of the game. Soccer has helped me become a responsible hardworking young adult that doesn’t like to fail. My never-quit…

My parents moved from Nigeria to Canada, where they had four children. Being the oldest, I have always tried to play the role of a protector and adviser, which is fulfilling when I see them feel comfortable when I'm around. At the age of five, my parents introduced me to the game of soccer, a game I have been intimately involved till now. This sport, being a team activity, helped shape my personality and character. A character in believing that working hard to contribute to a team effort is vital to the success of a club and that losing or winning a game is not the most important thing, rather learning and improving from it.…

In comparison to other players in my little league team, I was an inexperienced rookie. The issue at hand was never being able to enjoy the game of soccer again because I was unable to kick and handle a ball with my right foot, and more specifically, the inside of the foot which is arguably the most important body part for soccer. As there is no way around not using my right foot at all, I had to find other ways than actually playing the game. One day at Horsecreek Soccer Fields I was watching my little sister’s practice, and it was on that hot, summer day that I finally found what I was longing for for so long: an opportunity. Right as the routine scrimmage to signify the ending of a practice was to commence, Coach Holly asked if I would be able to help coach the practice alongside her. Not only did I coach that practice, but I have now been coaching my little sister’s indoor and outdoor soccer teams for two years now, and it has been an amazing couple…

My soccer career started as soon as I could walk, but somehow I still wasn’t very good at it at the age of 13. You'd assume ten years of practice and a sister who'd been the mvp of her high school team would have rubbed off on me, but that wasn’t the case. That is to say, I wasn't absolutely pitiful. I was pretty quick, and I could get a good foot on the ball about four times out of ten.…
