War has no boundaries like age, family, and time of day. In the story,”The Sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty a sniper is stationed on a rooftop near O’Connell Bridge and is tasked to “take out” any hostiles. While staking out, the sniper got shot in the arm by a fellow sniper and is faced many challenges in order to survive. Despite the Sniper’s skill, the sniper is realizing how war shows no mercy. When O’Flaherty wrote,“He paused for a moment, considering whether he should risk a smoke. . . He decided to take the risk . . . Almost immediately, a bullet flattened itself against the parapet of the roof.” Because war waits for no one, the sniper had to consider the consequences of smoking before he smoked. This shows how brutal war is, someone can’t…

The book I chose for the summative essay assignment was “American Sniper” by Chris Kyle. This book is about the courageous and thrilling memoir of the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history. With over 100 documented kills during his four tours of duty, Chris Kyle has shed light on the dangerous brave life of a sniper. During his four tours of duty in the Iraq war he has come close to death and saved countless lives. He changed a lot from just being a country boy and became what he describes as a man. The war really changed his perspective on his civilian life. The significance of the Iraq war was to help free the Iraqi civilians of their dictator, Saddam Hussein, and the radical Islamic insurgents who terrorized the Iraqi’s after the fall of Saddam Hussein.…

The movie, American Sniper, has definitely been one of the most anticipated and controversial films of 2014. The movie is directed by Clint Eastwood, and stars Bradley Cooper. This movie tells the unique and complicated story of former navy seal, Chris Kyle. Chris Kyle is mostly known as the most lethal sniper in U.S military history. Chris had 160 confirmed kills in total of all of his tours of duty. Unfortunately, Chris Kyle was killed at a gun range by a former marine who had a history of mental illness. Chris Kyle released a book called “American Sniper,” which later developed into a film. The movie was made in memory of him and to tell his story. This movie is a very touching war film. The care and passion that was put into this movie is clearly shown through the acting, cinematography, realistic war scenes, and dedication from the actors. This movie not only speaks to those who loved Chris Kyle, but also to those who have family members serving or have served in the U.S. Military. Clint Eastwood makes sure that those who served are properly respected and honored for their service. This is why the movie is a great film…

Clint Eastwood’s critical, box office and Academy Awards juggernaut tells the tale of Chris Kyle (Bradley Cooper), a prolific, er, American sniper, and his endeavours on and off the battlefield during the Iraq war. It’s a heavily lethargic adaptation of a heavily controversial book about a heavily divisive ‘American Hero’. Not to say that the flick itself is wildly patriotic – though the ending tries its best to disprove that – but nor is it an anti-war film, as director Eastwood haplessly attempts to argue. Which is where American Sniper’s greatest fault, among many faults, lies; it’s a film that is too afraid to carry any political heft, any commentary that would make the viewing experience worthwhile. As a result, the whole point of the film is rendered null.…

“War is like love, it always finds a way” (Bertolt Brecht). Although one is pure and the other evil, the forces of both love and war influence the best stories. A more interesting topic emerges when a character must choose between loyalty to a loved one and devotion to government. In “The Sniper” and “Cranes” the main character is involved in a civil war that calls for allegiance to the government despite his feelings for a loved one who fights for the opposite cause. “The Sniper” and “Cranes” share similarities and differences in the plot, the characters, and the theme. Although, these stories are two similar pieces of literature and share many similarities, they both are unique from one another and consist of many differences.…

I have recently watched a movie called High Noon and just read a short story called "The Most Dangerous Game." High Noon came out in theaters in 1952 and is about a Marshall who has four criminals who want revenge on him for putting one of them in jail. It has cowboys and gun fights in the Old West. "The Most Dangerous Game" came out in 1924 and is about hunting and the main character surviving all by himself. Both of these stories are very well told and partly have suspense. They might have a lot of similarities but they also have many differences in the two main characters, conflict, and the theme.…

    American Sniper Review

“The American Sniper” by Chris Kyle is an account of the deadliest American sniper ever, called “the devil” by the enemies he hunted and “the legend” by his Navy SEAL brothers. From 1999 to 2009, U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle recorded the most career sniper kills in United States military history. The Pentagon has officially confirmed more than 150 of Kyle's kills (the previous American record was 109). Iraqi insurgents feared Kyle so much they named him al-Shaitan (“the devil”) and placed a bounty on his head. Kyle earned legendary status among his fellow SEALS, Marines, and U.S. Army soldiers, whom he protected with deadly accuracy from rooftops and stealth positions. Kyle presents the gripping and unforgettable accounts of his extraordinary battlefield experiences through paper and pen and now ranks to many people as one of the greatest war memoirs of all time but to few a man representing immorality and death. Chris Kyle was a native Texan, born in Odessa, Texas, and was the son of a Sunday school teacher and a deacon. Kyle started his passion for shooting after his father bought him his first gun at 8 years old, a bolt-action .30-06 Springfield rifle. Later on and after school, Kyle became a professional bronco rodeo rider, but his profession ended abruptly when he severely injured his arm. After his arm healed, he went to a military recruiting office, interested in joining the United States Marine Corps (USMC). A Navy recruiter told him about the Navy SEALS. Kyle signed up, but was rejected because of the pins in his arm. A little while later, he received a call and he had the chance to go to BUD/S (Basic Underwater Demolition SEAL school), and finally joining the United States Navy in 1999. After 9/11, he was thrust onto the front lines of the War on Terror, and soon found his calling as a world-class sniper who performed best under fire. In comparison no military organization could operate if it respected human moral independence, that is, the…

“War does not determine who is right - only who is left.” This quote was written by Bertrand Russell, a British author, mathematician, and philosopher. This quote explains that in war it does not matter whether or not you do the right thing, but whether or not you know how to survive. This quote relates to Liam O’ Flaherty’s short story and Thomas Hardy’s poem. In “The Sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty and “The Man He killed” by Thomas Hardy both literary works show similarities and differences by the use of plot, irony, and theme.…

Main characters faced violent tragedies from both stories. Ironically, Paul and Lennie from both stories met death by the pulling of a trigger from someone who was not an enemy. “His hand shook violently, but his face set and his hand steadied. He pulled the trigger. The crash of the shot rolled up the hills and rolled down again.” (Steinbeck 106) After all that George and Lennie have been through, George had the nerve to put a bullet straight through Lennie’s head. “He had fallen forward and lay on the earth as though sleeping. Turning him over one saw that he could not have suffered long; his face and expression of calm, as though almost glad the end had come.” (Remarque 296) Even though Paul was killed by a comrade, he was glad that it was all over with. He died an honorable death, knowing he served for his country and tried to support for the other.…

I’ve always looked for a meaning or purpose that could connect with my life, but how can a 17 year old boy decipher and discover such a thing on his own? A possibility can be found through ways of expressing passion to the public. Such as movies, songs, poems, or even a piece of art. And even though I have seen or found some type of message in all these, I’ve found a special one with a film by the name of The American Sniper. This is a film about a U.S Navy Seal Officer by the name of Chris Kyle that was during the fight on terrorism. The things I can take from this film that lets it connect so well with my life is a certain scene about a saying of a sheep dog, and the similarities I can see with the protagonist and my father. Ideas and…

The plot constructions of the short stories are based on similar concepts and are designed to demonstrate problems faced in war. Both main characters are members of an armed force, pitted against a known enemy, and nothing is quite as it may seem at first. Both men are injured by the enemy, and they must save themselves. It is only minor differences that set the plots apart. For example, in "Beware of the Dog," Peter, a fighter pilot, loses a leg, ends up being captured, and must concede himself to fate. In "The Sniper," the main character is sniper who injures him arm, triumphs over the other sniper, and eventually must live with the fact that he has killed his own brother. The two plotlines focus not only on the war struggle but also on the differing end results of those struggles through irony.…
