Foreshadowing is when the author gives a hint or warning to something that is going to happen. Foreshadowing holds the reader's interest because they try to use these clues to figure out what happens next. “An abrupt sound startled him. Off to the right he heard it, and his ears, expert in such matters could not be mistaken. Again he heard the sound, and again. Somewhere, off in the blackness, someone had fired a gun three times” (69). This passage is foreshadowing because the sound did not sound like an animal. To foreshadow is to give a hint or a suggestion of a forthcoming event. Flannery O'Connor uses the foreshadowing effect adequately in "A Good Man Is Hard to Find." There were many hints and suggestions that something unpleasant was going to happen in this story. The moment the grandmother first speaks of the misfit, we can assume he will show up later in the story because he is headed in the same direction as the family. Close to the ending, when the gunshots are heard from the woods, we can assume that the situation cannot get much worse.…

For example, the characters in this play always get into fights and say things to “ruffle the other side’s feathers” and as a result of this tension, the two main characters commit suicide, without thinking about how to approach the situation rationally. For instance, at the very beginning of the text, the Capulet guards try to provoke the Montague guards by “bite(ing) [their] thumb at them, which is disgrace if they bear it” (I.i.43-44). This then results in a small fight and the Prince of Verona comes to warn them of the consequences. (This can also be an example of foreshadowing because now the audience knows that someone will endure a penalty as a result of this new…

Women that were resentful and violent were “abandoned by men as “crazy”, as well as “unfeminine” (Chesler, 45). As Antoinette is someone who is now more open, Mr. Rochester often felt that she was unfeminine and that he didn’t have enough control over her. Also, when Mr. Rochester finds out about Antoinette’s previous relationships, he feels like he has not been controlling enough and feels disgusted, “Now disgust was rising in me like sickness” (104) . Mr. Rochester later challenges her identity and takes over everything she has.…
