The Six Principles of Pilates
Created by Joseph Pilates, the exercise system known as Pilates was originally called “contrology.” Later instructors coined the six principles defined here, (in no particular order). These six principles are centering, concentration, control, precision, breath, and flow. Centering is focusing the physical energy for exercises from the area between the pubic bone and lower ribs, the “center.” Concentration- in order to get maximum benefit from each exercise, full attention and commitment are used. Control is the awareness and concentration on the movements of all body parts during exercises. Precision is the focus of proper alignment and proper form and placement of the limbs during each exercise. Breath coordination is emphasized, and considered a part of proper form for each exercise. Finally, flow is the emphasis that these exercises should be performed with grace, fluidity and relative ease of movement to be considered proper.
