Assignment 2: Characterization of Pangma-La’s father
Pangma-La’s father is a dynamic person. He has been described by many as: P18 l 8 ”Now there’s a hard man, there’s a hero”.
He was a hard man to please. She always strived to please her father, and wanted his acceptance. He had really high expectations to his daughter, and always has had(and he has always had).
P 19 l 32 “My daughter and I do not need porters,” Pangma-La’s father said proudly. “We are strong and we will climb the mountain alone.”
Not considering his daughters (daughter’s) needs, and this shows how he held his head higher than his and Pangma-La’s actual needs.
Pangma-La’s father tried to prove how strong he was, knowledgeable and fearless by ignoring the wives tales, and not believing in them. P 19 l 38 “Only weak men believe in old wives tales,”
As the climb progressed up the mountain, Pangma-La’s father was blind to her needs and pushed her. The fourth day when the avalanche happened, he stepped back briefly to support her, but then continues again as the strong man he was. This showed, that he was a caring father and only wanted the best for his daughter, but his dream and ambition got in the way again.
As they approached the top of the mountain the father became irritated at his daughter because she did not appreciate what he was trying to accomplish for her.
P 20 l 38 “Pangma-La,” her father scolded, “look at the mountain I named you for, is it not beautiful?” Pangma-La felt so ill she could hardly bear to look up at it, so crystal-cold and merciless above her. She hung her head, ashamed.”
Unbeknownst to the man, he had lost his daughter anyway.
The mountain goddess had pointed out his weakness (weaknesses), which was(were) his ego and fulfilling his heart’s desire.
P 21 l 28 “and I have given you your heart’s desire, you named your daughter after me, to be strong and light as the gods, and feel no human pain, and weep no human tears. And I have
