The Secret Garden Isolation
The Secret Garden, written by Frances Hodgson Burnett, takes places in India and gloomy Misselthwaite Manor. The protagonist is Mary Lennox, a disagreeable looking child with a selfish attitude. The antagonist is Archibald Craven, Mary’s uncle. He is known as a horrid, disagreeable, hunchback that everyone fears. Some other characters are: Master Colin Craven, who is Mary’s sickly cousin, Dickon Sowerby, who is known as both “a common moor boy” and “a Yorkshire Angel,” Martha Sowerby, who is the housekeeper, and finally a delightful red robin. In The Secret Garden, the conflict is about death, grief and isolation. Mary has been lonely her entire childhood due to lack of attention and then her parents’ deaths. Archibald Craven’s wife has died …show more content…
Both Mary and Colin were both isolated at one point in the book. It was the secret garden that healed both of them. When Mary’s parents died she did not miss them. For example, in the book it states, “Mary had liked to look at her mother from a distance and she thought her very pretty, but as she knew very little of her she could scarcely have been expected to love her or to miss her very much when she was gone. She did not miss her at all, in fact, and as she was a self- absorbed child she gave her entire thought to herself, as she had always done.” (Chapter 2, Page 9). Mary’s parents never saw her or thought of her, she was always watched over by the care of an Ayah. Similarly, Colin Craven experiences his own form of isolation when his mother dies, he is emotionally abandoned by his father, and then he is sent to live in a room by himself forever because his back is not as strong as normal children. In The Secret Garden, Colin states, “Because I am like this always, ill and having to lie down. My father won’t let people talk me over either. The servants are not allowed to speak about me. If I live I may be a hunchback, but I shan’t live. My father hates to this I may be like him.” (Chapter 13, Pages

Mary got separated from two of her children and was left with the youngest who was wounded and died shortly there after in Mary’s hand due to lack of medical attention. Mary learned that her elder daughter was held in the town that she was but never saw her. She continued with the Indians on their journey through the wilderness, barely surviving what is now her life. The Indians had stopped at many towns that they conquered, selling the settlers from Lancaster to different sannups and squaws (husband and wife respectively). This was exhausting for Mary as she had to be moving often with different masters each time. She finally saw her son as he was held captive at a settlement that was close by and again was separated shortly thereafter from him. She felt as if the journey was never ending and life was no longer important to her; “When I was returned, I found myself as unsatisfied as I was before […] my sprit was ready to sink with the thoughts of my poor children.”…

Her abusive father blames Lily for the death of her mother, not that he seems to care much about it, just enough to point fingers. After an incident involving her African-American care-taker forces Lily to run, she searches for any little traces of her mother she can possibly find. Her search brings her to the Boatright sisters, where she finds a home, answers, and more of motherly figures then she would have if her mother hadn't died. The Secret Life of Bees is a coming of age fiction novel written by Sue Monk Kidd. The story is set in the early to mid 1960s where plaid mid thigh kilts and cashmere twinsets were in style, not that Lily Owens had ever been able to experience this fashion statement due to her fathers strict ways. Lily starts in Sylvan, South Carolina, but in her search for her mother she moves the story along to Tiburon, South Carolina. The books mood is serious, due to death, injury, and other hard circumstances. Lily fights through these rough circumstances making the mood of the book also inspirational. The main lesson learned is said by a character named August whom employs Lily “Most people don't have any idea about all the complicated life going on inside hive. Bees have a secret life we don't know anything about.” This goes along with the famous quote “don’t judge a book by its cover”, because you cant always see whats going on inside a persons…

In “A Journey” Colm Toibin discusses the lonely heart of a mother and wife. Mary is trying to make a connection with both her husband and son, yet they seem unwilling and secluded. The family in general is dysfunctional because not only do they lack communication, but they’re also not family oriented. It is unusual for husband and wife to reside in the same home but rarely speak. Sometimes people give up on the things they anguish without even realizing the affects it has on their loved ones. Sad to say it is a common thing, the loss of affection. When someone goes into deep depression, it not only affects their emotional state, but their mental state as well. Consequently, they can lose hopelessness and with that their selves. “It seemed to her like something David would not give up, a special dark gift he had been offered” (Toibin 5). To the mother it is almost as if her son just decided to silence himself.…

There are two settings for this story. The first and main setting is an eye appealing garden next to Giovanni Guasconti's room which is located in Padua, Italy. This garden is used in this story as a symbol for the Garden of Eden. The garden is described by Hawthorne in such a way that the reader can almost picture a garden that is alive with vibrant colors and an array of flowering plants and shrubs. There are a variety of types of plants and herbs growing in the garden. Some of the plants are vines, some are growing in decorative urns, and some have grown wild until they were wrapped around statues (2217). The entire garden was "veiled and shrouded in a drapery of hanging foliage" (2217). The plants in the garden "seemed fierce, passionate, and even unnatural" to Giovanni (2225). Some of the plants in the garden "crept serpent-like along…

In J D Salinger's Catcher in the Rye, the story is told from a cantankerous adolescent boy named Holden Caulfield. At this point, he is looking for something, but is still unaware of what it is. He feels somewhat alienated, looking in. He immensely feels his constant state isolation and, although he does reveal a sort of self-awareness, his uncertainty about his place--or anyone else’s--in the world, is intensified by his critically pretentious assessments of not only the people in his life but also himself. The dilemma of being expelled from prep school is what sets the foundation for the story where he faces two options of either returning home to his parents or starting afresh on his own.…
