In this paragraph I will show my personal connection to a theme of family-ties in the short story “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst. On a page it says that “He talked so much that we all quit listening to what he said” (Hurst). I connect to this because my brother too is annoying because sometimes he never stops talking. Yet he talks with such an exotic vocabulary whenever he never stops talking. On another page it says “But doodle couldn’t keep up with the plan”(Hurst). I connect to this as well because my youngest brother doesn’t always listen or focus, but sometimes he follows with such…

Louise Erdrich’s “The Red Convertible” and John Cheever’s “Reunion”, both use symbolism to reveal the growing distance between the main characters. In the two passages, “The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man” and “Quicksand,” the authors provide the audience with a theme that connects them both. Many times, an important item in texts has more than one connotation. The Scarlet Ibis, written by James Hurst is a prime example of how elements in stories have multiple meanings. In the story, the Ibis is a rare and wonderful bird; however, despite its beauty, wasn’t made for that environment and eventually fell victim to death. The author was trying to relate the Ibis to the narrator’s brother, Doodle. Doodle had a slight mental and physical impairment, and his brother, trying to teach him to be the ‘perfect’ boy, pushed Doodle to physical exhaustion and died. Just as James Hurst did, Nathaniel Hawthorne used the letter ‘a’ from, The Scarlet Letter, to have multiple symbols: the sign of adultery having been committed, the ability to be able, and the ability to change.…

Excellent literature contains a meaning beyond the surface level of what is read. This complexity and deepness makes the author's message more powerful. After all, an author instructing a reader on a virtue is ineffective compared to a story that plays with one's feelings, drawing a reader in to impart a valuable lesson. In his novel, The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne uses symbolism to reveal information about his characters and illuminate his message to the reader. Through symbolic meaning, the scarlet letter, sunlight, and Pearl add to Hawthorne’s story to enlighten the reader on the characters and message.…

When reading a short story or a poem it is not possible to comprehend the author’s true meaning of his or her written word without implementing symbolism to bring the literary work to life. Sometimes the symbolism can be interpreted differently by each person. However, we do know that the symbolism of the literary work is created in the imagination of the writer to depict certain events or interrelated facets of the literary work. Moreover, the joy of reading is so that the reader can interpret what these symbols mean to them and begin the wonderful journey into the world of literature.
