Doodle! Doodle! I shouted where are you? These words are being shouted by the narrator, "Brother," in the short story, "The Scarlet Ibis" by James Hurst. Brother is the brother to a disabled boy named William Armstrong. When William is born he is not suppose to live very long. The family names him a big proper name, but brother said, "such a name only sounds good on a tombstone". So Williams brother decided to call him Doodle, because Doodle is always crawling backwards like a doodlebug. The brother of Doodle is very disappointed in him, brother does not enjoy the fact the Doodle will not be able to play with him. Brother had gotten angry, he began to storm off and leave Doodle by himself in the woods. Doodle was not quite quick enough to catch up with brother, but he was trying. Brother began to notice how far behind Doodle had gotten he hears him cry out, "brother, brother, don't leave me! Don't leave me!" (425). Doodle did not want brother to leave him, he is scared of being left alone because it was storming also because it was a rule to not leave Doodle alone. After brother hears Doodle crying out he begins to turn back "went back and found Doodle huddled beneath a red nightshade bush beside the road" (426). The narrator is back to check on Doodle, he has found him in a tragic situation. Doodle had been bleeding him from the mouth and had died. Brother began to cry he laid there for a long time, what seemed like forever, "sheltering my fallen Ibis from the heresy of rain" (426). Brother kept thinking about how he was just trying to help Doodle. He wanted Doodle to become a normal boy, that way he could play like the others.
