The Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry takes place in the countryside of Mississippi in 1933, during the Great Depression, when African Americans dealt with segregation and mistreatment by the Whites. However there are whites in the story such as Jeremy Simms, who gets beaten by other Whites for being kind to the Logan kids. The Logan family are African Americans that set an example of the mistreatment blacks had to deal with in this time period.
