The Role Of Perseverance In Professional Sports
Many people said he's not supposed to in the NBA, he's not supposed to be a NBA all-star, but all this criticism would push Jimmy Butler to better. Jimmy’s high school coaches said he wouldn't go anywhere with basketball. He was able to prove them wrong through his perseverance, hard work, and effort. This shows that we should all be able to persevere during hard times. Some people argue that perseverance does not make you successful but you won't go anywhere without it. They say it's just pursuing a higher goal with failure like setbacks. Others say it's a mindset developing an ability to deal with setbacks. They're not wrong in any sense at all, and they are logical, because if they can pursue a high goal they will get set backs along the way. But what happens if they hit a dead end, they hit a fork in the road then what? How would they get through it? They fight through it, and a good example of this is Jimmy Butler. At the age 13 jimmy butler was kick out his own home with these words from his mom “i don't like the look of you. You gotta go”. During his senior year he would average 19.9 p.p.g (points per game) and 8.7 r.p.g (rebounds per game) and jimmy would be nominated MVP for his team, but that wouldn't be enough for jimmy to land a division I scholarship. Jimmy would eventually go to Tyler Junior college, during his first game with TJC he would score 34 points and from there he would score consecutive 30 point games. After the season jimmy would land land multiple division I scholarships and he would choose to go to Marquette College based off academic records the school had, and not there basketball

He averaged 20.8 minutes, 5.9 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists while shooting 40.7 percent from the field and 90.2 percent from the line last season. His primary strength has been his ability to play both shooting guard and small forward with the ability to hit three-pointers. His primary weakness has been his steadily declining field goal percentage over the past few years along with his aging athleticism. Butler was signed primarily as a veteran presence to help mentor the younger players on the roster and remains a fantasy non-factor in…

In the article, “The Winning Edge,” the author, Peter Doskoch, explains the reasons to persevere. When you start something, don’t stop until you reach success. Thomas Edison said, “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” (Doskoch, Pg. 161, Paragraph 3). Being successful doesn’t pay off if it’s easy. Some will give up because “it’s too hard.” Isn’t that where the joy of success comes from? If it’s easy, it’s not worth it. You also have to realize that nobody is perfect, no matter how hard they try to be. “The Winning Edge,” tells us how there is always more room for improvement. We are all human, and it is natural for us to make a couple mistakes here and there. The important thing is that we learn from our mistakes. Another point that “The Winning Edge” points out is that we should all learn to like what we do. When we make a crappy mistake and take a wrong turn in our lives, make the most out of it. Doskoch mentions that “Perseverance...can itself foster…

Beating something can require perseverance in many different ways. In The Call of the Wild, Buck is taken from his cozy home and put on a sled dog team. He fights with the lead dog, Spitz, often, until one time Buck finally beat him in a fight. On the other hand, my Gram went to college and took a speech class. She was afraid of speaking in front of a large group of people, so she used perseverance to help her control her decisions. While Buck and Gram are different, they were both afraid at one point and both beat a fear they had. Both Gram and Buck had to experience something new, whether it was fighting with another dog or going to college and talking in front of people.…

LeBron James was a stellar basketball player. He was offered a full scholarship to The University of Indiana and took it. LeBron was one of the best players around, but he had to go to college for a year before he could be eligible for the draft. LeBron’s life goal was to become the best basketball player in the world. That never happened. LeBron James suffered from a severe leg injury midway through his college season January 15, 2004. LeBron was never able to play the game he loved at the professional level. He now works at a bank and cashes checks for a living. This could be a reality that we would have to face today. In fact, though it is obvious that this story is not real, it is based off of a real player’s life. Tyrone Prothro was destined to be the next hall of fame NFL player, but he got injured in college before he could make it to the pros and now works at a bank, cashing checks for a living (Travis). I believe that high school athletes should not be required by law to go to college before becoming professional athletes because of skill level, money, and injuries.…

Instead, he spent a tremendous amount of time playing basketball at a park near his house. This shows his determination to play professional basketball. Arthur once said “when I get to the NBA, I am gonna buy my momma a nice house and my daddy a Cadillac so he can cruise to the games!"(Steve James). This quote shows a sense of care for his family that he wishes all of his family members are not in poverty. Luckily, “St. Joseph’s scout watched him to play basketball at the park, and recruited him to St. Joseph high school (Steve James)”. “This was where the NBA Hall of Famer and Chicago folk hero Isiah Thomas went to high school (Steve James)”. “Their academic reputation and basketball program were considered to be excellent in the state” (Steve James). “Also he was offered to a partial scholarship to attend the school” (Steve James). My dad grew up wanting to be a firefighter. Once he grew up, he decided to put that dream into action by actually becoming one. My dad had to work through the many physical and mental challenges and tests in order for him to make his dream come true. However, when he met my mom and they were instantly in love. After they got married, my mom spoke to my dad telling him that if they were going to have a family, my mom wouldn't want to have to worry about his safety, because being a firefighter is very dangerous and stressful on a family. So, my dad decided that being a dad was more important to him. Although it was still hard for him to know that his hard work to become a firefighter was all for nothing. Another example of when my dad had to persevere was when he had a seizure. My dad had 3 seizures and he told me that he felt as if he wasn't in control of his body. He said that knowing he didn’t have control was one of the scariest things he has experienced. He had to work through fears going through his head, but also physically. He had to go through many tests and recovery assignments that required him to persevere physically. Overall, my dad has worked very hard to get to where he is now and that is why he is a great example of showing what perseverance can…
