The Role of Patronage during the Renaissance/ Baroque Period (530 Words)

The role of patronage during the Renaissance/ Baroque periods impacted art, artists, religious institutions and the public alike. Patrons’ motives varied from having the utmost control when commissioning art to providing a means of government to personal religious reasons. Patrons of art included the Church, government, aristocracy, guilds and wealthy merchants, such as the Medici.

In 1445, Florence, the Palazzo Medici began its construct through the commissioning of Architect Michelezzo by Cosimo de Medici to design not only his personal home for himself and his family, but also a place where company headquarters were established and business affairs were held. Although the home was grand in size and violated city laws, the feeling was to evoke and reflect modesty, poverty and charity. Not only did the Medici Palace reflect such things, the elements used in designing the building, such as the disks that bore the Medici arms, gave stability and a great aura of dignity, which would boost the owner’s status. This residence gave the Medici establishment within Florentine’s social hierarchy, as well as a symbol for others to emulate. The Palazzo Medici set a standard for which future Florentine architecture would be held accountable for. Just south of Florence, another patron of power seized his opportunity to commission a few gifted artists to interpret and invoke his own proud demands. From 1508-1511, Raphael was commissioned by Pope Julius II to paint his private library, the Stanza Della Segnatura. Julius had his own vision of ‘new, worldwide Church” in which he demanded his humanistic ideas to be reflected in the art he held patron to. Raphael executed his frescoes to the very detail that Julius requested and created a masterpiece that brought the worlds of theology, philosophy, the arts and justice together, achieving a balance between the Renaissance and Classical

    The first factor that moved Florence in to the Renaissance was their Republican government. A part of their government was seven chosen men who they referred to as ‘senior guilds’ which formed a body of magistrates and ruled the city. This government was created so that it could preserve Florence from the rise of terrible city tyrants who were out to get many cities. This government introduced situations of the city as public matter rather than private matter. Anyone a part of this government had to be elected or appointed. No positions were inherited to people. People elected their rulers and it was the ruler’s responsibilities to help the concerns of all the people rather than just a few. The second factor that moved Florence in to the Renaissance was the rise of Fine Art; starting with paintings. In the late 15th century many artists came around to some very famous pieces and new concepts of art. One artist that played a major role in this was Gentile Da Fabriano. He’s most famous for his new Gothic International painting, the “Adoration of the Magi.” This piece of art became the new talk of the town. It incorporated many influences from all over Europe, not just Italy. It also purposed many ideas and storytelling, which was something that hadn’t been done at this time yet. Another famous artist, which many of us know today, Leonardo Da Vinci. He’s most famous for his painting of the “Mona Lisa” mostly because of her interesting smile. The third factor that moved Florence in to the Renaissance was the introduction of Humanism. Within the late 14th and early 15th century, a new perspective of learning, writing, creating, and even thinking arose.     Patronage in northern Europe is different from the one in Italy. In the early renaissance, main patron in Italy is the Medici family. This big merchant family benefits a lot from the fast development of Italian economy. They spent a large number of funds on art region, promoting the renaissance to expand.     During this time pieces of artworks were being produced at a strong rate. This was due that artists were gaining recognition over large areas. This new fondness of artwork that contained humanistic influences were new, and people were amazed by the style that had not been seen before in their lifetime. A large proportion of the artwork that was being made was made for the church and popes. One such artwork was the school of Athens, created by Raphael Sanzio, for the Apostolic Palace, in Vatican City. This work is of a grand scale in that was commonly taken on by the artists of the time. This particular fresco is 16’’5’ by 23’’ 3’ and is one of Raphael’s more famous works. Just by looking at this fresco you can see the strong influence of humanism. The theme itself is a strong give away, for it has a landscape full of philosophers from ancient times. As the lines of the fresco draw your eye the center of the landscape, you see two of the giants of ancient Greek philosophy Aristotle and Plato. One of the reasons that your eye is drawn toward the center of the painting is because Raphael was able to use the concept of using a vanishing point to make this 2d painting 3d.
