The Role Of Gun Violence In The United States
Background: In the last ten years over 100,000 Americans were killed due to gun violence and many more have been victims of other gun related crimes. Several more have used guns to committed suicide and young kids have been wounded from playing with them. There was more than 350 mass shooting alone in 2015. The President is currently using all of his every source he has to reduce gun control. He proposes we make it more difficult for someone to have access to buy a gun by means of doing background checks on anybody who wants to purchase one, having programs to find those who are selling and buying them online, making sure people with mental illnesses are not able to purchase a gun, and improving guns and the technology used to make them. In America the uses of guns are present in our society since dawn of time. In discussions it is always a controversial issue between both sides. However it seem being a holder of a firearm only bring consequences and with gun control policy it seemed nothing has changed. Gun violence is a problem and gun control laws for guns has no influence on crime commit by gun, it is just allowing gun violence to spread. Many death topics are heavily related to uses of guns as such homicide, suicide, and many more. America gun control is not a solution, guns serve more about killing than protecting lives. What is needed for reducing gun violence is more laws for restrictions on gun, less the availability of obtaining guns, less productions of guns. It may not stop the violence, but at least it would reduce rather than increasing.…

Since the inception of firearms, people have been wielding all types of arms and ammunitions against each other in order to injure or kill their opponent. In the modern world, this violence is unwarranted and goes against everything society stands for. Nowhere else is gun violence most prevalent than in the United States of America. Because of the Constitution, Americans have had the right to bear arms since 1776. When the Constitution was drafted, the term “arms” meant nothing more than a musket or perhaps small one-shot pistol. However, as arms and ammunition have evolved much like any other technology, their capacity to accurately kill humans has increased. So much so that one firearm can be used to kill many people…

The idea of violence and mental illness in the news can affect society in many different ways. News articles that focus on mental illness is intended to change society’s opinion on gun control to make them believe it is the person’s fault for the gun violence. Instead of finding fault in the guns itself, people want to blame mental illnesses for causing all the problems in the world, “conservative commentator Anne Coulter provocatively proclaimed ‘guns don’t kill people- the mentally ill do”’ (Metzl and McLeish). Blame is being put on people with mental illnesses and no one is blaming the actually weapons. In reality the blame should be put on both the guns and person. The people who are committing these crimes are not sane people, and they have many problems. They can be extremely dangerous to the world, but so are guns. People have discovered that “60% of perpetrators of mass shootings in the Unites States since 1970 displayed symptoms including acute paranoia, delusions, depression, before committing a crime” (Metzl and McLeish). How many of this mass shootings are publicized in the media? The answer is that more than…

America should have better gun control for many reasons, people don’t feel safe with others having guns because they believe criminals have a higher advantage of killing innocent people and could cause more trouble. Even if it is the police’s job to protect us from this happening, there are others that take the advantage from using their gun and they make big mistakes with it. America must have a different way to control gun safety and gun laws should be stricter.…

Have you been thinking about gun control lately? Have you been thinking about how safe you really are in this world including your children’s safety? Can you believe that the total number of incidents in 2015 is a shocking number of 48,825? That is completely insane. Currently gun control is a topic of conversation mostly because of the recent tragedies. Statistics show that gun violence is raising the bar in tragedies through the year, now no legitimate study in the U.S. has ever shown that gun control has no positive impact on crime, death rates are on the rise, and more incidents are occurring in smaller towns during daily routines.…

Since the founding of our country, millions of lives have been taken due to lack of gun regulation. In the past year alone, there have been more mass shootings than there have been days in the year. These acts of terror have resulted in 12,703 deaths, 3,385 of which have been children and teenagers aged 0-17. The topic of gun regulation has become more and more heated over the past few years due to the increasing amount of controversial cases involving weapons (i.e. police brutality cases and racial discrimination incidents). Due to the rise in gun-related deaths, the United States Federal Government continues to argue over the way to reduce the number of innocent lives lost. Republicans argue that mental health should be a greater focus than…

Since 1982, at least sixty-two mass shootings have occurred, thirty-two of them since 2006. (Aronsen). Jared Loughner was sentenced to life in prison after shooting nineteen people in January of 2011. Last July, fifty-eight people were shot and twelve killed while watching the new Batman movie in a theater in Colorado. In December, twenty-six people were murdered, including twenty first-graders, in a Connecticut elementary school (Follman). The issue of gun violence only becomes relevant after a horrific event such as these, then fades from public concern after about two weeks. The number of injuries and murders using guns in the United States is a large number, which can hopefully be lowered by implementing statewide, or even nationwide gun buyback programs, stricter carrying permit laws, and making it harder for the mentally unstable and convicted felons to legally obtain guns.…

Anytime there is a crisis that has taken place, it is up to the president to take matters into his hands and come up with a solution. However his plan to stop the tragic shootings by choosing to “make background checks for gun buyers universal, putting a ban on high-capacity magazines and a ban on so-called assault weapons” (Metzler, 2013) is not the answer. Making background checks universal includes making them a law for all sales including for private sales. This then causes an additional cost to the seller along with additional time and responsibility. It also means that the buyer must give out all of their personal information to a complete stranger which opens doors for additional illegal activity such as fraud or identity theft. Placing a ban on high capacity magazines will also yield no real results. The only thing it will do is make people carry more regular magazines that take no time to switch out. His final proposition of banning assault weapons will also not bring about any results but could cause more problems. In the recent shooting hand guns have been the weapon of choice. Taking assault weapons away from the general public will not stop the use of any other weapon; it will simply cause the use of those other weapons to increase. If all of these…

Besides being at the top of Obama 's agenda, gun control is also an issue that has received enormous emphasis in the media. In his address, the president sought extensive support for comprehensive background checks to buy guns, an interdiction on high-capacity magazines and assault weapons. According to President Obama, the proposal will diminish the rampant gun violence in the country. This new plan aims to do the following: to seal background check escape routes to keep out guns out of the reach of criminals; to completely ban high-capacity magazines and military assault weapons, as well as other necessary steps to minimize gun violence; to guard schools and other public environments; and to improve access to psychological health services. Statistics reveal that up to forty-five percent of all households in the US have a gun in their possession (ProQuest Staff). This shows that guns are too easy to access and their abundance in the US ought to concern many…

Gun violence in America is not at all as bad as it is in Sierra Leone and other countries with war and little law enforcement as we read about in the book a long way gone. In the book the main character Ishmael discovers that America is not at all like he heard through rap songs. When he moves to America and tells his story of being a soldier and killing people the people he talks to about it think that it is cool and Ishmael states in the book “violence in America is romanticized. I do agree with this statement that we do make war look easy and fun through movies and video games. We do not understand what it is like to be in a war and witness killing and bloodshed every day.…

For many, mental health and gun violence seem to go hand in hand. While it seems logical that individuals that perpetrate mass shootings must have some mental illness such as in the case of Adam Lanza who in December 2012 carried out one of the most tragic mass shootings at the Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown Connecticut. In that shooting Lanza, who was 20 years old at the time, killed his mother then went on to slaughter 6 adults and 20 children between the ages of 6 and 7 and finally taking his own life. (Connecticut Shootings Fast Facts - CNN.com) Lanza had in fact had been diagnosed with having Autism Spectrum Disorder which is characterized by “persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction across multiple…

In Franklin E. Zimring’s article “Firearms, Violence and Public Policy” (published in Scientific American, Nov 1991), Zimring states that the public disagrees with laws over ownership of handguns. If the rate of handguns continues to increase, the national program will have to start limiting the availability of handguns. This would cost the U.S. billions of dollars which would show up early in the program. For the reason that reductions would decrease, the access of handguns would increase over time. With that being said, within 50 years, the number of handguns could exceed from 35 million to 50 million, if not greater.…
