We all understand the fact that English has been growing in popularity largely as economic globalization is getting bigger. The benefits of English as a common language for communication and interaction far outweigh any possible disadvantages that it might have. English is a global language not because the world shows respect to it by accepting it as a global language because it has the characteristics of a global language.…

It is being referred to as the global language as it is seen as a common means for interaction between different countries. This new phenomena can be seen in a positive light because the use of English as a common language brings efficiency and greater understanding. Language is a very important means of communication in daily human life. Human beings use language, both in written and spoken form, to express their ideas. In a wider scope, language functions as a means of international communication by at least two persons. In a smaller group whose members share the same language, for example, there are likely no difficulties in using the language since the persons involved in the process of communication are used to speaking their own native language. On the other hand, if the people taking part in the conversation speak different language, they must have difficulties or obstacles in getting along with each other. One of the problems causing the difficulties is the language used. Accordingly, they need a language which is understood by both sides, the speaker and his or her counterpart. This will occur when the speakers are from different backgrounds: nationality, race, and language. In this case, an international language is very badly needed, especially the one that is the most widely spoken in the world. One of the languages is the English language.…

Translation involves the very idea of transformation of thoughts into language which is the most unifying factor among human communities. In our multilingual, multicultural, transnational world, therefore, there is a need of a common global lingual space. English, being the globally acknowledged language is often associated with certain hegemonic domination over other indigenous languages of the world. Though there were some issues of power struggles and politics involved with the language since its colonizing period, it by no means indicates that it attempts to occupy the other lingual spaces to establish its supremacy.…

It has been almost two centuries that English education was introduced in India and since then it has been playing an important role in our national life, not to mention our educational system. Most people believe that the then British rulers needed some cheap native clerks who could work in their offices much like what Lord Macaulay called “a class of people, Indian in blood and color, but English in taste, in opinions, in morals and in intellect”. But I personally don’t hold this view. Even ardent patriots like Raja Ram Mohan Roy expressed that learning English would help Indians to understand the philosophical and scientific advancement of the west. Later on English became a national link language and made Indians united in their struggle for independence. It has also improved our languages and literatures to a great extent.…

Do people agree that English is a global language? Do people know why they need a global language? Why do people all over the world learn English? Of course, English is a global language, but it does not mean everyone can speak English in the world, and it does not mean every country uses English as an official language. In 2009, English is the native language for one third of all people and on the first ranking that most people have spoken. (Weber, 1995, The World’s 10 most influential language.) People can see English everywhere, in every country. Besides, although English is not an official language in some countries, it is still a most often being used for second language around the world.…
