From ancient times, to less than a century ago, the russian people have had dead princes come back to life. Sort of. As coming back from the dead is a yet unproven concept, these princes came back, either as imposters or as a methaphorical being.

The first case of a returning prince is in the old slavic fairy tale, The Firebird. (link in refrences) In short the story is about a young prince Ivan, who went out to capture a firebird for his father. His elder brothers also tried, however they failed. For example if he were to scrape his knee, he would bleed continously, for days on end, and was potentially life threating. This limited his ability to act like a normal child and play. He was watched constantly and forced to abstaine from many common childhood pastimes. When his family was captured and killed by the Soviets in 1918, he was but thirteen years old. (The Tsarevich)

There is an fair-sized list of Alexei imposters, including Heino Tammet who died in Canada. However one man in particular comes to mind, Michael Gray the author of Blood Relative. Tells about how Alexei escaped and went off to live in Europe, eventually marrying and having a son. (Gray) (book synopsis)

Alexei did not only come back as imposters but also as a saint. He is recognized by the Orthodox church (along with his family) as holy matrys.(Guardian) As with Boris and Gleb, and to a lesser extent Dmitry, Russians like to give innocent Princes the position of saint after they have fallen in

The majority of the population wanted Ivan back. He agreed as long as he could have the absolute power to punish anyone he thought was disloyal. In addition to punishment Ivan then disposed of their estates as he saw fit. After strengthening his position as absolute ruler of the Russians, Ivan decided on a new instrument of cruelty, the Oprichniki. The Oprichniki were selected by Ivan himself and were forced to swear him a personal oath of allegiance. They dressed in black and rode black horses. Most were ruthless criminals who would kill a priest during his sermon if that is what Ivan asked. Ivan recognized himself as the abbot and the Oprichniki as the monks. They had sacrilegious masses followed by orgies of sex, rape and torture. Ivan acted as master at these rituals pulling ribs out of men's chests with red-hot pincers. He would then throw himself before the alter to repent and finally read Christian sermons to his drunken Oprichniki (Bos,…

Alexis Mikhailovich was the Tsar (emperor) of Russia from 1645 to 1676, relishing in a long reign due to his ability to balance the leading boyar families (which was exemplary as the Tsars were dependent on the support of the boyars). Alexis' first wife, Maria Miloslavskaya, died in 1669, but not before giving birth to thirteen children, in which only three survived infancy. One of the three children was a girl named Sophia, and the other two were boys, Ivan V and Fedor III. Unfortunately, both the sons were weak in physique and health. Fedor was very intellectual due to the excellent education from a monk but was terribly disfigured and half paralyzed, whilst Ivan was nearly blind and was physically and mentally impaired, also being disfigured.…

Besides the political fact that both the western European countries and the Ottoman Empire were hostile, potential threats, there was little to separate them in the Russians’ minds from a religious standpoint. The Russians were firmly Orthodox, and Ivan the Terrible had claimed, through a Byzantine ancestor, inheritance of the title of Czar. The Islamic Ottomans and the Catholic Europeans were both viewed antagonistically. Corruption and power-hungriness in the church hierarchy, which had contributed to the schism between Eastern and Western churches in the first place, kept away the brotherly love that should have existed between groups that both called Christ Lord. The political elites were disinclined to let religion bar them from any self-benefiting action in any case; but religion certainly influenced the ordinary citizens.…

In 1553 he had a near fatal illness that left him desperate for a way to preserve himself. He called on the supernatural to heal him maybe proving that he did indeed have an illness of the mind as well as the body. He tried witches and soothsayers to sustain him but none of his remedies worked. Nearing the end, he was more unpredictable and irritable than ever before. Ivan the Terrible died on March 18, 1584 of a stroke leaving the kingdom in a state of jubilance. Later, a 1960’s examination revealed high levels of mercury in his body leading historians to believe Ivan had been poisoned. But, despite that unsurprising fact, Russia was free from terror. But it was not yet free of despair. Ivan IV had left his kingdom to his remaining son Feodor who led Russia into the Times of Trouble that ultimately put Russia in the Romanov Dynasty. Ivan did horrific things but he was not a complete blight on Russia. In fact, he was an important character in its development. In his thirty seven years on the throne, Ivan gave the Russian monarchy power and authority. He set down foundation for a new Russian state that had not only gained new land but was influenced by it.…
