Abstract
Retiring at the age of sixty is not an option or a desire for most American workers today. Organizations must realize the importance of utilizing the experience that older workers possess. Members of the senior workforce are often discriminated against due to outdated stereotypes and misconceptions. Rather than segregating older workers, they should be appreciated for the wealth of knowledge and life experience that they can contribute to association in today’s business world. By eliminating common misunderstanding, organizations can move forward with recruitment, integration and retention programs that would benefit both the seasoned employee and this country’s business industry. The economic crisis is affecting nearly everyone in America right now. America’s older work force is being forced to face to make tuff decisions regarding their futures. The generation of people born between 1946 and 1964 are classified as “Baby Boomers”. This group is comprised of 76 million people. Depleted saving accounts and failing retirement funds have forced many workers over the age of sixty to put off their retirements due to these financial difficulties. Retirement aged workers are trying to stay employed longer to make up their losses and eventually retire in a manner that they had originally planned for when they began their professional careers (Pope, 2009) According to the Center for Disease and Control, the life expectancy of a person in America has been on the rise for over the past decade. Doctors also note that not only are people living longer lives, they are much more active. People want to remain vital and productive for as long as possible (Pope, 2009). Difficulties

Although older workers have the experience and desire to work, it is not always easy for these seasoned workers to maintain or obtain new employment in today’s job market. Even though they possess the knowledge and experience, they are struggling in a very competitive job market against younger workers who are often seeking lower wages and can provide an organization with longevity. Perhaps the biggest obstacle that older workers must face is misperception. The challenge and responsibility of Human Resource Managers today is how to properly recruit train and establish a productive work environment for retirement aged workers. There are currently 14.9 million unemployed workers in the United States right now. 2.2 million of those unemployed workers are aged 55 or older. According to the U.S. Labor Department, half of the workers who are 55 or older have been unemployed for six months or longer. Since 1991, the percent of workers who have expected to retire after the age of 65 has increased from 11 percent to 33 percent.
