The Recipe of Beowulf The epic poem Beowulf gives a vast powerful arrangement of principles, morals, and standards. The values presented the most often are admiration, heroism , and relationships. The values together blend to show you who Beowulf is as a character. Beowulf’s character has a unique complex blend, his statements prove this. They vary in different ideas and many different viewpoints. Beowulf speaks on Grendel‘s mother killing Aerschere, "Wise sir, do not grieve. It is always better to avenge dear ones than to indulge in mourning. For every one of us, living in this world means waiting for our end. Let whoever can win glory before death. When a warrior is gone, that will be his best and only bulwark."(Beowulf 1384).
Aeschere is King Hrothgar’s trusted companion and advisor. Hrothgar is the father figure to Beowulf, which speaks volumes on the importance of this statement. Giving someone he looks up to advice shows the sincerity in the words he speaks. He believes that the words are helpful. Beowulf shows his character by the things he says.
He describes his beliefs as the only thing that is important when you have passed away is how powerful your reputation is. This makes me believe that even with his Christian Anglo-Saxon background heaven is not the main goal. It is more important that he becomes a legend that many stories and tales can be told of him. He proves this when he says, " Let whoever can win glory before death. When a warrior is gone, that will be his best and only bulwark." Bulwark meaning protection, the chance of "being in a better place" is not mentioned, only the thought of being a hero.
