The Reaper's Image Analysis

“The Reaper’s Iimage” is an example of an American gothic literature story. In Stephen King’s “The Reaper’s Image,” he makes it an American gothic story by fitting all the elements into it. “The Reaper’s Image” is about how if you look or stare into the famous Ddelver Gglass and see the reaper then you will disappear forever. The “The Reaper’s Image” is an example of American gothic literature because it has all the elements of one such as; torture of characters, bleak and remote setting, and supernatural events. One of the reasons this is an American gothic story is because there are characters who are tortured in the story. An element of American gothic literature is the torture of characters.. In “The Reaper’s Image” characters are tortured as they stare into the mirror and someone goes downstairs and never returns so the people are waiting forever, “he stared into the mirror and waited” (King). In this story there are several characters who are tortured such as; the Bates family, Carlin, and the duchess’s husband.They all stared into the mirror and waited for people to return. They all went downstairs after seeing the Reaper in the mirror and never returned.
The story takes place in an old, worn down museum where the Delver glass is located. There are also several other examples of bleak and remote setting for example, “As they drew closer to the roof of the rambling structure, it became oppressively hot in the dark upper galleries” (King). The author used those words because that’s where they’re putting the delver glass. The room where the delver glass is located is very bleak and remote for example, “The gable room was explosively hot, lit only by one cobwebby, many-angled window that filtered the hard outside light into a dirty milky glow” (King).
