In the article The Re-Education of Jim Collins author Bo Burlingham identifies many items leadership expert Jim Collins feels aspiring leaders be should be mindful of. Aspiring leaders should value the information found in Burlinghams’s article because is being passed through him from one of the most respected organizational leadership professional of the modern era, Mr. Jim Collins. The principles and skills they outline will undoubtedly be important for leaders to understand and develop as they progress into leadership roles. If an aspiring leader chooses to apply these ideas to how they act, behave and how they overall lead their followers, they will become effective and successful leaders themselves. The first being strong leadership must be clear and present all levels of the organization. The middle level leader manners just as much top the organization’s success just as much as the top. Collins states “great leadership at the top doesn’t amount to much if you don’t have exceptional leadership at the unit level. That’s where great things happen” (2013). The next items are important for aspiring leaders to understand in the application of their skills. One is leader needs to be understand when they are the right tool for the job. They must be assertive and realize when it is their time to display their leadership capabilities. Just as important, leaders need to be able to realize when they are not the tool for the job and set aside and assume a role as a follower. Collins’ final application principle is understanding how to adjust between the roles of leading and following. He states “The ability to toggle between leading and following is critical, because circumstances change” (2013).
